Whenever the subject of Radio comes up, the same theme always arises, 'if I had 1xtra in the car it'd be on'...or something similar.
Even my 51 year old, white Northern Irish mother listens to 1xtra, by choice, on the DAB kitchen radio.
And although a lot of my friends haven't much awareness about specific genres, they too find 1xtra to be their station of choice if putting on the Sky radio channels or internet radio.
I always forget Kiss is only in london
Only Fm station I listen to is Peace Fm (Manchester),but it would always be 1Xtra if it was terrestrial. It must a lot of listeners anyway,so I doubt they would change now.
how can you make something more popular by widening the range?
a fanbase is a fanbase
lol 1xtra aint some kind of underground station its extremely easy to get hold of in the car / home / radio if the listener really wanted to.
1xtra is just like radio 1 but an urban version of it
hence why i dont really like it much
choice is better imo
i just gave kiss as an example as a comparable station.
i dont know how listening figures look outside of london so dont want to make misleading statements.
the thing with becoming terrestrial is that it would cost the BBC a lot more money as PRS rates would increase. It would also attract negative attention from the likes of Kiss and Choice etc... who (despite playing chart playlist crap) will complain that it will compete with the services that they provide. To avoid negative press (about competing with kiss etc..and also about increased prs costs whilst playing some similar tracks to Radio 1) before the licence fee agreement is announced in 2012, the BBC trust would block any proposal to make 1xtra a terrestrial station.
Also as Rinse keep finding out, there is limited space on the terrestrial dial.
every new car will have wifi in 5 years anyway so people will be able to listen then
I always have the ability to listen to 1xtra and never do really. Once in a while i'll see it meantioned on the BBC homepage but apart from that its exposure isnt as much as i would imagine for a station that been goin on for so long.
More so i get the impression its a where the bbc stick shows they don't really care about.

I'm close enough to London to get Kiss FM luckily, 1xtra would be good but tbh I rarely listen to the radio if it aint on my laptop. Even driving I just listen to my ipod
still listening 2 radio 1 in '010<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
but tbh radio on the whole is dead, the way internet has taken over all forms of media is just a madness.
