I'm abit thick... what does "merges generic forms" mean?

Grime is more like reggae/bashment than it is like rap

Grime came from council estates in London made by poverty stricken kids/young adults and was initially listened to by people in council estates all over the country.

But today not much grime being played in council estates. Sad but true

Really I think theres more of a case to suggest that the main influences are not us hip hop on grime but a movement from early hardcore rave scene; it doesn't seem too hard to trace a lineage from hardcore to drum n bass to el-b type things i.e. garage and then finally move to grime. The difference seems to be that where hardcore and drum n bass draw more influences via jungle from dancehall/bashment etc. grime and garage do owe some influence to us hip hop i.e. lyrics, street culture etc; but think about the bpm of grime 140, hip hop like 80/90. Bpm seems to be a good way to stress the emphasis on uk rave lineage rather than us hip hop.
As for 'pop Englishness' think youre gonna have a problem relating this to early periods of grime, which I would say would be much more interesting to write an essay on.

This might not make a huge amount of sense, was more a stream of consciousness rant.

There needs to be 'A Reflective History: 10 Years of Grime:

    2002-2012' book.

Anyone want to help me co-write it?

Unfortunately not. Your best hope are YouTube documentaries.

tbh its good to have a basic knowledge of the subject to be able to write something coherntly.

When you dont know who titch is, thats not a good start.

Its the same with ANY subject you are writing an essay on, especially at university. Maybe you'll be lucky and find the marker knows nothing at all on grime then you can blag it to an extent. (what i did with my dissertation)

A pretty good basic starting point for impact on society would be to draw parallels between the respective lives of Dizzee and Titch.

Both hotly tipped MCs with big followings at the time, they clashed here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gJtEC8Z514

Dizzee went on to be a multi-millionaire megastar, Titch is in prison for life after supposedly shooting someone who dissed his brother in a track.

Also, there were grime artists at London Fashion Week (think it was Kozzie, Merky and Faze Miyake) which shows the different regard the genre is held in now from those days where angry kids were decked out in Sports Direct's finest.

Dot forget people like Jon E Cash Danny Weed and other early producers who helped shape the sounds.

Would mention PAYG too. And how pirate radio was so important

This, I wouldn't recommend doing your essay on "Grime". Chances are it'll be shit

    BUT IF YOU ARE THEN
Mention people like J-Sweet, MRK1 from Virus Syndicate. He was a sick Grime Producer in 03'

Rebound X (He's a myth now lol) Basically the main producers like @CatchACat said.

the mentioning of said producers and their beats have no relevance to the question though.

hardly worth writing about if you have little knowledge yourself about grime or any other music of ldn/uk origin to compare it too.

Basically, write what genres grime emerged from, what it came to be musically, focus on a few artists, maybe run career parallels between people like Wiley & Dizee, Tinchy & Chip and how they are regarded by grime fans but, when you write your conclusion, you need to state that "pop Englishness" is nothing to do with what grime is or should be.
