Chelsea suffered another penalty shootout defeat in the Russian capital as they lost to Lokomotiv Moscow in the Railways Cup.

The Blues were held to a 1-1 draw by Lokomotiv after extra-time and then lost 5-4 on spot-kicks.

Michael Essien, playing in an experimental front three alongside Joe Cole and Nicolas Anelka, put Chelsea ahead on 27 minutes with a sweetly struck volley from the edge of the area.

Deco had the chance to double Chelsea's lead soon after but his dipping effort from distance flew just wide of the post.

Ruslan Kambalov levelled for Lokomotiv after 83 minutes as his 30-yard free-kick sneaked past Petr Cech's outstretched right hand.

Chelsea then slumped to their fifth successive shootout defeat as Wayne Bridge and Andrei Shevchenko both saw their shots saved by Ivan Pelizzoli.

Luiz Felipe Scolari's side must now face AC Milan on Sunday after losing for the first time under the Brazilian.

Milan had earlier been beaten 1-0 by Sevilla thanks to Gennaro Gattuso's own goal, and it is the Spanish side who will now contest the final against Lokomotiv.
