I allways use effects on vocals like some light compression to keep the level of the vocal consistant and maybe sum highpass filtering just to remove the 50hz area maybe add some reverb aswell or light chorus.

But would add a "Mic pre/Comp EQ" in the recording path so you get a fatter sound on the way in.
I also use various "Waves" plugins to limit,eq and compress, then after I add various delay styles and reverbs.

Start with getting your levels right before even recording then use compressors(not too much) etc when it comes to the mix. Go to soundonsound to get tips on mastering and mixing.

I think its best to, record in sections, then when its finished add some reverb and other effects and then add in add-libs(i think theyre called) vocals over the top...
