CC was talking present day and I was talking historically.
1. How have Uruguay won so many championships if it's always been dominated by Brazil/Argentina? [FYI Urugauy have won the Copa America at least once a decade throughout the entirety of the cup except for the 70s]
2. Pointing out the current strength of Uruguay is a means of swatting the people who keep mentioning the silly "Brazil/Argentina not in the Euros" argument.
3. Pointing out the historical strength of Urugauy reminds people that despite the limited number of teams in the Copa America, Brazil/Argentina have not been all powerful in the way people assume.
Furthermore the number of 'difficult'/'Top 10' sides in those championships is an argument as to why Brazil and Argentina should have been more ruthless, and why the notion that the Brazil/Argentina sides of the 60s, 70s and 80s were better than Spain in 2012 is funny. e.g.
Argentina have only won two titles since 1959
Between 1949 and 1989, Brazil didn't win a single Copa America.
Between 1959 and 1991, Argentina didn't win a single Copa America.
Brazil have won more than half their Copa America titles in the last 25 years.
Uruguay have nearly double the number of Brazil titles.
Bra/Arg have not cleaned up in South America. Nostalgia clouds peoples judgement.
