I don't see the defensive thing at all, it's weird whoever brought it up, with Italian football, it's like chess it's methodical, they try to stop other teams playing. With French football it's not that at all, it's definitely fierce with all the strong players there, it's technical, players like Boudebouz, Menez, Brahimi, Mollo.. Like there are so many more expressive Taarabt players there & yes I said Taraabt.. He's the type of player why I like watching the French League. I still think that people need to go back and try to see Yaya for Monaco.

This was his 1st full game in Ligue 1

I agree with @Zoffie on this. I've never associated French football with defensiveness. As gay as it sounds, Montpellier (started the season ridiculously, then tightened up), Lille (especially given the players they lost), Saint-Etienne, Toulouse have all been a delight to watch this season. PSG as well under Ancelotti (and they're only going to get stronger).

It's annoying to know that Montpellier, like Bilbao, are probably going to get raided this summer.

The ones you mentioned have emerged in the past 2-3 years maybe?

Go before that and you see a lot of defensive mids being the most important players.

I would say Ligue 1 produces far more No 10s and creative midfielders than Premier League clubs. And better defensive midfielders.

So because Yaya Toure is the most important City player, City is defensive?
When Roy Keane & Vieira was running around as supposedly the most important members of their teams.. What did that mean for the Premier League then? That it's defensive...

Give me the names of the teams & the players before in Ligue 1 that were a defensive outfit based around a DM please.
It's a bizarre claim, but, perhaps it's born out of the strength of a lot of the African imports, it's not defensive but it can definitely be tough.
It's so much more technical there as well, always has been.

Those players you mention are much more than defensive midfielders, their centre mid partners Barry and Vieira were the defensive mids. It's the same with Xabi Alonso and Khedira of current Real for example.

Lyon's use of two natural DMs Toulalan and Diarra around 06, or Capoue + Sissoko of Toulouse currently.

The French national side play with 2 holding midfielders, we still had 33 shots in our last game.

    2?
Pretty sure you played Cabaye with Gourcuff and Nasri partnering ahead for an hour
then subbed out Cabaye for Diarra, the rest were wing and striker substitutions.

Sorry, this is absolute nonsense, Capoue's distribution is very good for instance, it's why clubs like Barcelona are interested in him.

There isn't a defensive attitude about French games where they pack it out with defensive midfielders you mention Toulalan, do you know why Lyon bought him in the first place, did you see him at Nantes, he was their creative hub.

There is no sea change in the football, there isn't no change to more attacking football. Ben Arfa was just complaining that in the Premier League it's different because they don't pass the ball around like they do in France. If you are basing this on what you read or just what you see on a screen, then I understand. Nobody that has watched Ligue un through the years can agree with what you are saying whether they enjoy watching the league or not. It's just not based on defense it's a weird thing to say. What defensive performances do you remember from French clubs in the Champions League?
I remember when Monaco knocked us the thugg-out in the semi-finals, sure wasn't about defense then. Lyon's purple patch in the competition with the likes of Juhninho & Essien above Diarra .. They played defensive football? Like, it's just the weirdest observation.

Look at how Manchester City use Yaya Toure look at Yaya at Monaco. (woulda thought they'd tell him to stay back lol)

Would you actually say that Toulouse don't play defensively?? They can't even manage a goal per game. I've watched at least three of their games and it was just the worst.

Actually I'll admit Lyon have done very well to play not defensively in the CL.
    But Lille 2005?
PSG in 2004, when Chelsea played at home? I remember they had about two chances, then just went defensive for most of second half.
Bordeaux most their games they played in CL.
I'm pretty sure they're doing it every season.

I don't remember any of these performances, who was in Lille's 2005 team? Was that Pedretti?
Was Marseille defensive this season, Monaco when they got to the final, Blanc hates defensive football and with Bordeaux made an effort to play attacking football.

Is it a coincidence that the supposed most attractive team in the Premier League was shaped by a French man. Did he get that from the defensive Ligue un? Petit & Vieira Vieira & Gilberto. That team must not have played football.

I like the array of teams you mention involved in the Champions League though the years, can't say it's panned out that way for Portugal or Holland.

It's when they played Bodmer and Makoun together. Didn't watch Ligue 1 then so not too sure what they did in the league but it was terrible.

Marseille atm have great attacking talents but again they have emerged quite recently.
Monaco played well that season too. I'm not denying that.

I've not seen what Wenger did with Monaco back in the day, nor his first few seasons at Arsenal so no comment on that one.
