TBF it's hardly like it's going to be a common occurrence, fair play to FIFA if they assumed that if a team is good enough to get all the way to the CL final against Europe's elite, it's likely they'll be finishing top 4 in their own league.

I'm not sure if it changes if the winner places outside of the top four completely. It would make more sense for the winner to go straight in at the group stages?

Despite a lot of people hating Liverpool, I thought it was fairly obvious that the Champions of the tournament should be able to defend it, but the rules did say 4th would qualify. Our was the exception, where adjustments were made because Everton stood firm in wanting to qualify and Uefa told us that they would let it happen this time but would adjust next time.

100% 4th place will not qualify for Champions League if Chelsea win it, unless they finish there themselves.

Yeah I thought this was the case.

The champions should be able to defend it, bit dodgy but it's a flawed system.

The FA/Premier League have stated years ago that they would would honour the arrangement to allow the Champions to defend the trophy and give Europa League football to the 4th placed team.

This scenario has been discussed before, no club should actu surprised by it. Like it was mentioned earlier in the thread, it's not a common occurrence.
