Teams possibly affected: Tottenham, Newcastle, Arsenal
I'm not sure if 3rd place gets moved down to 4th (and has to play the qualifier), or if the winner of the Champions League just takes the 4th spot (and the qualifier).
Although what we know for certain is, at the end of the season, the team in 4th will be watching on intently.

I've been hoping Chelsea win the CL because then it doesn't allow for Newcastle or Totty to get a hold on a top 4 spot, and all that comes with it. Added finance, increased status, it would just be a threat to the top four position we need to be looking at.
We need to be in the 'big 5' it's not the big four any more. City, United, Chelsea, Arsenal. We need to be in the mix there somwhere. Not totty or newcastle which is what could potentially happen if they get cl and build on it.

There are three spots for Europa League
Carling Cup (and qualification from early rounds)- Liverpool
FA Cup (and straight into group stage) Chelsea or Liverpool
League position (and straight into group stage)- 5th place. Unless Chelsea win the Champions League and finish outside the top four then this EL place would move up to 4th place.
But because Chelsea or Liverpool must win the FA Cup - two spots in the league will be Europa (if Everton made final would be more possibilities).
I think if my workings are correct whatever happens the top 6 are guaranteed European football of some kind .
Chelsea win both trophies = 4th and 5th get Europa League (if Chelsea finish in 4th or 5th then 6th gets it).
Chelsea win FA Cup but lose Champions League- normal rules apply, 1-4 CL and 5th EL plus Liverpool+Chelsea
Liverpool win FA cup, Chelsea lose CL. Liverpool get the better EL place. 5th qualifies for Europa directly, 6th get the carling cup winners slot which means a few qualifying rounds .
Everton definitely not in Europe

Chelsea could finish w/ absolutely nothing.. (well maybe an FA Youth cup trophy haha) & w/o UCL football next year.
I think we have the squad to still try & compete for 4th. Especially given that Ivanovic, Terry, Ramires & Meireles are out of the UCL final, it helps to fight on more fronts. Bertrand has shown his class as cover for A.Cole. Drogba & Torres are showing better form & are competing for lone striker..
Sturridge is our top EPL scorer & can't get a game. So, we have good options is what I am trying to say. We're still to play Newcastle, who have to play City & Everton as well.
Hopefully Arsenal or Spurs give us a way back in to finishing in the top 4.
I feel like we should still try.

Newcastle don't deserve CL football lol, 1 good season? They would go out in the group stage ffs

3rd spot will definately get CL. Read the confirmation online last night (forgotton the site i read it on). 4th place team will indeed miss out.
I'm still worried about Arsenal. Only 3 points clear of Newcastle (who are in 4th) and they have a game in hand. 6 points clear of Spuds who also have a game in hand. We've bottled it at times when we needed to win to ease the pressure (QPR, Wigan..). Can't relax just yet.

I was saying 3rd will get definately get CL because Hij said he wasn't sure if 3rd gets moved down to 4th place (then having to play the qualifer to get in the CL).

But I'm pretty sure after what happened with Liverpool when they won it (where they finished 5th) UEFA made an announcement on what would happen should this happen again...
Pretty sure Chelsea won't win it tho, can't see them getting past either Bayern or Madrid. Barca didn't have a striker on the pitch and this season have been carried by Messi's extraordinary form.
Not taking anything away from Chelsea lol, was a big result

I'm not sure if it changes if the winner places outside of the top four completely. It would make more sense for the winner to go straight in at the group stages?
Despite a lot of people hating Liverpool, I thought it was fairly obvious that the Champions of the tournament should be able to defend it, but the rules did say 4th would qualify. Our was the exception, where adjustments were made because Everton stood firm in wanting to qualify and Uefa told us that they would let it happen this time but would adjust next time.
100% 4th place will not qualify for Champions League if Chelsea win it, unless they finish there themselves.
As you said the Champions should be allowed to defend the trophy regardless of where they finish in their own league. Just like Liverpool were allowed to years ago. And yeah the winners should be allowed to go straight to the group stage as the defending champions. But i think the 4th place team that would miss out, should have special dispensation to still play in the CL (like Everton were allowed). To go through a season doing all that work, to then find out, it was ultimately to play in the Europa instead of CL is a straight joke lol.
