I always feel my drums are poor in my beats, anyone got any tips?
Also any links to good drum resources would be appreciated.
Thanks.
copy el bs hi hats then go off on one with a big bass drum + 2 wierd sounding snares or claps or rim
i find that layering snares can create some sick snares and claps.
The same goes for nearly all the big Grime producers. There's very rarely any creativity when it comes to drums these days, most just opt for the Pulse X drum pattern or your typical half step stuff. I generally try to take inspiration from old Grime tracks, the patterns them days were much different compared to what we have now.
MR K-RO - Prevail
I've been listening to so much Dj Oddz/Musical Mobb/Eastwood beats recently...They're the type of drums I'm playing with...I haven't even started trying to create that bass! I know it's a distorted kick in rebirth but I can't replicate it in Logic! I always get close but never master it! lol So frustrating!
I want to start use a lot of experimental fx, and more reversed drums. Does anyone have any recommended drum packs what have good claps and hats?
I'm always having trouble with drums seems to be the hardest part of making a beat
yeah this is true. i'm not gonna lie i like half-step drums because they really get the aggression across sometimes. however, the old beats are a lot more interesting since they didnt really care for formula. theyd use anything percussive and throw it in their drum loops which ended up making some really interesting sounds.
a good way to learn drums is to try recreate drums from tracks you like.
producers with good drums you could study = terror danjah, src, waifer (its the same pattern in every track though), JME (tropical), Joker (all half-step but an example of good halfstep), D.O.K and Ironsoul to name a few.
Good sounds, don't click them in.
You will get a more human and natural swing to your drums. These 'producers' that click in sounds tend to have square sounding beats as well as unrealistic sounding kits. In reality they would need like 3 drummers to play their complicated ass drums.
