View Full Version : How important is the dj???
me!!!

When I was growing up garage was becoming big and raving was at its peak. There was loads of raves on every week all over london and further afield too, them times the biggest part of the night was when a big dj turned up like ez or tuff enuff or ruff cut lloyd. It didnt even really matter what mc's were on when ez turned up coz he would mash the rave up on his own but now things are different.
My question is how important is the dj in todays music? Could you just listen to mac 10 without any mc's just coz he is a big dj or would you rather listen to a crew with a swag dj??
I think in grime people dont know too much about a good mix and things like that, they are just looking to hear their favorite mc's spit over beats not caring about beat matching, but thats my opinion, what is yours?

he's central to nearly all genres
Especially so for grime as alot of the scene revolves arounf sets/pirate radio

Dj's are very important but there are a lot of "record players" out there
that don't have a clue about the roll a dj should play. I agree the the tables
have turned and the mc is more prominent these days.

Personally I can't tell the difference between an average DJ and a good DJ. Unless they are chopping up and scratching on the spot which is sick but I haven't heard anyone do that in grime, just switch between tracks moving between tunes.

Of course he is but thats not the question im asking, im asking how important he is? Everyone goes on about how good mac 10 is but do you need a dj that can hold a mix and that or is all you need is a dj that can just quickly drop tunes and go from tune to tune quickly not bothering with holding a mix??
I think that people are more bothered about hearing mc's spit when back in the day mc's would hold back and let the everyone appriciate the mix, could you see this happening today?

DJs are losing power to the MC; people would rather turn up to see an MC rather than DJs atm in m opinion
DJ is so important but they don't get the recognition they deserve

Yeh you can tell the difference between a good DJ and an average one - mixing tunes that aren't similar, chopping up tuneas and also their hosting is important, structure of their shows etc
I could happily listen to a set with no MC, I think Maximum B2B Spyro is one oog the best line-ups you can get on Rinse

to be honest until my dj mate told me about what makes a good dj i didn't have a clue if a dj was good or not but now if a djs big its as good as having a big mc. a big mix & drop'll make me skank more than a big bar

You only have to listen to a set where Cheeky was DJing (is he all funky now, haven't heard from him in ages?) to know that a DJ makes the set.
An yeah, all DJ sets are sick. If I wasn't out, Spooky's sets on rinse got me too hype man.

The more i have got into grime the more i have noticed how shit club dj's are. Cheeky was painful sometimes with his mixing, but i quite liked his selection at times

I think if you had a dj who didnt mix at all but played a fat selection and dropped all his beats there wouldnt be a problem, thats how grime music is.
This thread has shown me that alot more people know about the importance of a dj than I thought.

There is definately a big difference between average DJs & Good ones. Good DJs define their sets themselves whereas average ones rely on the tracks their playing and/or the emcees

Djs are very much needed in the scene.
There needs to be more djs that dont think there too showaa, because there on radio and get beer hits .....we dont care, just play the friggin music and shattap!
Chaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
I respect man like Spyro, Maximum,Vectra,Spooky ...there big but dont brag like say there the best thing to happen to grime and feel say that the ''scene'' needs them.

dont matter even if a dj is good in grime because mcs spit all over the djs mixes.
grime mcs need to know when to shut the fuck up sometimes.

Sometimes its good if they spit over the mix sometimes though but only if they dont lose their flow coz of the mix

True stors init grime is a mc baised scene if iam honest like they have the face and we do bare work -- With out us nothing runs - producers dont get the beats playe don air and mcs vocals dont get promoted - as sum 1 sed we are the back bone -- WE DONT GET ENGOUGH PROPS
regarding the raves ....
ive seen grime djs duppy a dance differnt -- i fully advise every one to reach any grime rave with vectra spyro or maxy on da flyer - cah dem lot are da pl dat do duppy a dance
dem sets dat every one raves about are not good coz of mcs there good more tym coz of da selection of riddems dat why ppl dat cant selct struggle
but iam tlking to much i got lil points 4 days looooool
holla bk ...jj

grime being an mc based scene.... the power shift can happen... if djs go up in number, and productivity.
DJs need 2 produce, or release tunes...
have their own mix cd series
or somthing tangible instead of loads of radio sets.
a few djs should try der hand at promoting events aswell.
