View Full Version : Your Controversial Opinions on Grime?

LC1
22nd July '08, 09:17 PM
People what are your own personal thoughts/opinions on grime that differ or go against the grain of the general opinion in the scene on here. we all must have some and it will be interesting to see who or what are big points of controversy.

my 2 are probably that i have never rated terror danja's beats to the level of nearly everyone else... i have to say that i massively respect them in terms of skill and can see why people rate him but to be honest i never really saw the fuss over most of them like zumpi hunter etc.

2. trim is top 3 for me. i think when he puts out a good song and not some half arsed business he is way a ahead of most. i think he is one of the cleverest as i see metaphor bars as boring but to me his word play, and ways to describ ethings and people are funny and very original. when he steps on a big beat like i'm not remix, liar liar, get with it, don't talk etc he tears it up. he is original ans skilled.

and i'll throw another one in... i actually like these electro cross over tunes as ive liked house/electro for a long while and i think they are a breath of fresh air from the bait hip hop that was getting thrown out. i fucking hate that shit. everyone bar possibly kano and maybe bashy sound shit on hip hop compared to grime.

I like Devlin, but there are SO many other MCs out there right now who are just dead drop boring. The likes of Dot Rotten etc. Their bars may have content, but it just doesn't go with Grime beats, and I would never have listened if they were on Hip Hop beats, there are other good rappers for that.

I agree with LC1 at the Terror Danjah thing, he has 3-4 huge beats, but that's it, and they all sound the same anyways.

1. So many MC's are boring and monotone, why would non-grime fans wanna listen to it really?

2. Grime fans are too stubborn and moany, just because an MC doesnt make every tune a grime one doesnt mean theyre selling out, its called gathering a wider fanbase. I dunno how fans expect artists to make a living when grime obviously aint going anywhere right now

3. More MC's should spit on Bassline like D Double has with Murkz, bassline is the big thing right now, theres money to be made. People would much more appreciate an actual good MC (presuming they can be a hype MC aswell) as apposed to someone who is merely a shit grime reject

4. More hype/dancy upbeat tunes are needed, all this hip hop ish shit is cool, but people like to dance, face it!!!!

I agree Breeze is decent, but being in Roll Deep doesn't really help him cos he is overshadowed by the over mcs.

I don't mind Brutal on a set, but I don't like the cockyness. I can't watch a video of him on a set and he's yet to impress me with a tune.

I agree with that, there's some bangers on it. Take away the Avenue, Shake a Leg and Good Girl and it's not really that bait IMO.

It was bait, very bait.

In the context of the time of release they should have come with something a lot more genuine then that. Even Wiley acknowledged later it was a mistake by the crew to release something like that. They should have represented the sound a lot better.

Large up Adidas I knew you rated Breeze. He ain't brilliant but some of his bars are pretty good. I have some set with him and Will will wing it to you if you want it

23rd July '08, 09:12 PM
Production is still big on that IMO tho. Heat Up, When I'm Ere, Poltergeist and People Don't Know were all heavy, then Let it Out has some dirty bass in the verse and I felt Show You as well.

All listenable and with the exception of the bait sampled tracks (Good Girl, Avenue, Shake a Leg, Flying Away) it's a complete sounding, decent album.

yeah those were good tunes, 'They Don't Know' was good as well despite maing the hook melodramatic and really, pie

'got two jobs just to raise her kids' - fair enough, to be shortly ruined by a whining vocal of 'oooohhhhhhhhh what a shame' if I remember right

Still the beat for that was large.

sorry I meant 'people don't know', Megaman's fault still. The remix was so filthy, the height of Dynamite's spitting career which was to only tumble afterwards
