View Full Version : Could you keep up with grime if you didnt have a computer?

I've come home from uni for a few days and stupidly didn't bring my laptop. this made me realise that without my computer or th internet i cant really stay up to date with grime.
Even listening to Logan (on FM) is impossible unless you in or around london. as i found out when i had classical FM mixed in with wearin my rolex as i drove down the M1.
I know the majority of people out there have comuters and therefore can get hold of info but een then the channels for recieving the information arent being pushed to a wider audience. Grimepedia etc should be pushed at non-grime fans maybe (bad example) by promoting on NME website?
The grime scene is too insular and not being marketed effectively

I could, but I do rely on the internet a lot.
Infact grime is under represented on the internet and this is something I am working hard to rectify.
Teaming with Elijah's events, this should help publicise us and what we do and hopefully vice versa.

Nah, being so far from the centre of grime - i.e. London, there's no way I'd be able to keep up with grime without the internet. Having said that tho, I keep up with most new music through the internet

are you doing anything to promote it to a non-grime audience? even starting random threads on other music genre forums may help.

I probably would be able to but not as up to the minute.
I regularly go to wileys house with a blank cd and leave his house with his harddrive.*

I remember when songs used to filter through eventually and you'd get a guy in the endz copying it onto every ones computer.
Now you can just check the artists myspace etc.
good thread though

Apart from the internert or speaking to some1 who had been on the net.
Radio is the only way to hear about grime and thats not too great.

nope, suppose i could listen to logan through the old FM dial
Randy
7th February '08, 02:43 PM
i suppose you can kinda add westwood to the list now and a few rinse shows are consistently on but even then you have to be in london or have DAB or a PC. i hate the midlands sometimes and am glad to be moving into or around london in the summer

I think with the amount of downloads available to grime fans eg
Radio rips
myspace tunes
free mixtapes
Grime is one of the best genres in terms of using technology to promote. If someone wants to get into grime they can get a good example of the scene without spending any money or bootlegging.
Just needs that bit of offline promo to get non grime fans into it

i got mates from when lived in london and i go back quite alot so it wouldnt be too hard keeping up without the internet.

Very good topic! Since I got a laptop about 4-5 years ago and found rwd I found out about a lot more mc's than I would have been able to hear just from going to uptown and dark and cold to buy mixtapes. With the amount of downloads available you get to listen to mc's that you may not have wanted to waste your money on incase they turned out to be shit.
Personally without the interent I would not be listening to barely ANY grime as I don't go to raves anymore and I rarely listen to radio shows either.

The only thing I Could do is Listen to Logans show.
Can't lock to rinse here, wont be able to purchase CDs from ukrs or any other webshop, wont even know whats come out/coming out.
I probably couldnt, but thats not realy a bad thing cause the internet is the present and future and grime is doing well with the internet compared to some other genres.

name any underground genre that you could keep completely up to date with without the internet or a friend with the internet telling you about it.
i even have problems keeping up with hip-hop without the internet and it's one of the biggest genres in the world

If you ain't from London then probably not...
In london you can lock into rinse on fm (usually) and go to local record shops to see whats new
Other places have record shops which stock some grime but usually they are a few months late

it depends how up to date you wanna be.
members of this forum are up to date on every little thing that happens in grime, but without this im sure you could still keep up on the releases and major events

Nah I wouldn't, I don't don't have a decent FM radio hookup in my yard. And portable radios have swag quality so I don't use them. But maybe if I didn't have a computer I would, I dunno.
