Griminal and No Lay have both released mixtapes for free download on their myspace and I was wondering if people thought this was a good move for other MCs in the future?

The Griminal one in particular was outstanding and the cover was better than a lot of others that you have to fork out cash for. I just think that moves like this are very big for artists and the scene in general. They create hype and by giving something for nothing, people will hopefully buy and show support when they do eventually release something.

I also know of at least one person who never liked Grime, downloaded Griminal's and have been playing it ever since.

That's two free releases in January alone, hopefully there'll be more in 2008.

I think overall it has to be a big thing, it means that people who may not know to much about grime can get free LEAGAL music to try out before they decide to go out and buy a CD, it also shows that the artists are dedicated to spreading the grime scene further by making hype as gk said.

That's good to hear about Griminal, I agree I think he deserves credit for putting it out for free - I don't know when he finally locked off the project but still, I suppose he doesn't have to put out anything for free so props

It Would Be Good As Leakers/Bootleggers Etc. Wouldnt Have A Place In The Whole Mixtape Thing But Grime Would Never Have 100% Free Mixtapes As They Are What Are Predominantly Making The Money Atm.

Promo or mixtape - iI reckon it had more and better quality tracks than a few mixtapes that I've paid for. And if the official 'mixtape' is bigger and better than this, it could well be one of the best Grime releases to date.

On that point, Al3x, you thought the quality was bad - do you mean quality of production/sound? The quality of the one I downloaded was very good. Surprisingly good in fact.

i wasnt feeling nolays still, beats were either poorly made, poor mixdown or the majority was hip hop.

I think its the Promo to which i thought was Shit!

The mixtape gotta be better than this.

Its not Just Bars implies Griminal is deeper than what we have already heard/seen. The promo didnt deliver anything new or of a higher standard.

The Promo was massive.

I just wish I hadn't heard nearly all the tunes already.

Thats what im sayin. Iv heard them all before...if not the beats the lyrics.

When an artist drops a mixtape i expect something fresh not recycled bars like soulfood 2!

I never agreed with paying for mixtapes.
Albums and E.ps yes, but mixtapes are to showcase yourself and more time they are not good quality. I don't want to buy a CD full of average/poor grime tunes that have hip-hop claps and structure throughout. Separated by skits and radio rips.
If artists want money make albums, leave dj's to make mixtapes (something none of them do)
Had to get that off my chest

griminals ting werent outstanding it was just CDQ's of tunes that had all had airplay on radio for months.

J2K said he's not going to put out anymore mixtapes for people to pay for, all free. He said there's no point. Only will make people pay for singles/albums from now on...
