"Dizzee Rascal's debut album Boy in da Corner was one of the very best black records this country has ever produced, but its excellent sales were partly down to it becoming a hyped, 'must-have' purchase. Now it languishes on the shelves of many as something they'd rather display than listen to. Let's face it, most people would rather be comforted than challenged by."

basically im agreeing with what their sayin which is.....
album is hyped.
people buy it just for the sake of saying
"oooh ive goty a diverse mixture of tastes look at my boy in the corner album next to my arctic monkeys/prince/amy winehouse and radiohead EPs.
if the same reviews were given to Mr. Wongs I bet this will stay in your car.....you would see alot more people championing his music.

i know true grime fans will enjoy it (myself included) but i get the feeling people force yourself to say "classic bars" or "sick tune" when you hear a verse or track just for the sake of it?

I don't care for the fans of music that are paying too much attention on other people seeing them listen to it.
"Look at me I listen to ______ but i also listen to ________ and ______; im cool."
I only really are about the people that care about the music.

Nah I don't agree at all, if that was the case then Wiley, More Fire Crew & Kano would be in Dizzee's position because they got the same hype but the only difference is, that Dizzee's music spoke for its self and that why people got into it in a big way!

If you listen to Dizzee's music mainly BITC theres a message there, theres a meaning he's saying something that wasn't represented before. People do hype that album up but for me he deserved it.
What the hell was Wiley saying in anyyyyyyyyyyy of his albums?
I like Wiley, I love his energy but he really needs someone to say but what on earth are you talking about? BITC sounded like a journey and I was talking to someone a couple of weeks ago and they were saying that all of his albums you can see what was happening and was an insight into who he was and his journey in music and outside of it.
BITC he was that ghetto kid, hard raw and exploring the music...
Showtime was hard and dark as hell and he was reacting off of the hype off of his first and he seemed a bit fed up with the garage/grime scene - the stabbing - the hate and jealousy. He was fucking fed up (respect me)but still trying to tell a story of who he was.
and Maths and English... he seemed like he'd moved on he was experimenting with new music taking a fun aspect to it and making music that although quite simple and basic was fun and harmless to listen to which explains him around now.
Dizzee deserved everything he's got although I wasn't a fan of Maths and English - I respect the hell out of him. Of course it would be nice for old dizzee to give back somethig to the scene but heeeeeyyyy hes doing his dirtee stank and NG's thing and well good luck to him.

exactly
i have things like the hendrix experience next to home sweet home on my shelf etc, people get confused when they look at my cd collection, none of this bullshit about "ooo i have this and this so i must be cool"
if i have it then i must enjoy listening to it.

I rate treddin nearly as high as BIDC, there r a lot of different concept tunes and the beats r listenable. It was also wiley final say on eskimo, since then his style has really changed.

I think there's an element of truth to what the review said, but it's not totally accurate.
The truth is, Dizzee's a good songwriter that made sense of some gritty underground production.
He wrote big hooks and catchy verses (with relatable content) over abstract beats.
The Mercury did help to hype him up to a wider audience (just like Dynamite at the time), but it was his content, imagery and songwriting ability that has sustained his career imo.

this certainly applies to the easily-led sort of casual music listener, narrow-minded but yearns to look like they know their shit.

Fuck what some shitty commercial magazine says, Boy In Da Corner has its underground fame and recognition for a reason.

Boy in the corner is the best grime album to date.
But if this album came out today no one would bat an eyelid, This says more about the grime than Dizzee Rascal.
I sometimes think people don't understand the power of the Mercury awards.
People who listen to Jazz, or Classical composers would have been buying his album.
Honestly without that Award and following up with Showtime which was nothing special he would have been dropped from his label.
The quote at the start was true for the most part. I mean 5000 people buy a mixtape and half a million people bought his album. Pure madness.
