I have never really got into the hype of newham gens tbh, I knew what d could do in a rave but that was about it, tbh I liked foots more than any of them.
They were once hailed as one, if not the best crew in grime, dizzie signed them and................well not much!
Personally I dont think they have managed to adapt to the way grime has become more lyrical, more like rap.
I am expecting to get slewed for this opinion so I though I would go have a look on the myspaces to see if I could be proved wrong and I couldnt. The tunes on the spaces are not of the standard of a crew that people say are the best, d double I think is only rave mc (a very good one at that though) and I think footsie is the one holding things together and that really doesnt say much does it.
Your thoughts.

i've never been that into them either, think its because of the lack of material thats out there. hearing some big footsie productions at the moment but dont think he's anything overly special as an MC and am not a fan of DEEs style cos he always seems mashed

So there so far is nothing to prove me wrong, I dont think anyone can show me more than 3 good vocals from them and thats at best, and this is supposed to be one of the best crews in grime getting brought in by dizzie and semtex and getting better airplay than alot of artists that deserve it, ITS EMBARRISSING!!

Newham Generals are the best crew in this scene, standard
They have the bars - Double and Foots, who complement each others' styles well
They make great songs:
Back to '95
Violence
Things That I Gotta Do
My Life
Merked Again
Bell Dem Slags
Move To The Beat
'Thats Normal'
Since When
Don't Be Dopey
Obviously Monkstarr feature on quite a few of those, but its a minor - the abilities involved are still in the crew
Tubby is a big DJ, and they've got their dubstep vibe going on
All of them produce, Footsie top 3 selected arguably
Biggest crew in the scene, OGs could get close to them in time. Maybe Ruff Sqwad but I think Stryder is getting to big for the crew now, balance aint right imo

I have heard a set of d on jungle with fun and skibba and they are both taking the piss out of his noises, proper boying him to his face and going on about how many raves they are doing over the weekend.
I think the problem with d is that his bars used to be proper greezy and he got had up on road a few times because of them and didnt do shit. Now I think he must be in a position that he dont want to spit bars like that know more coz he dont really live it.
Bullets aint gonna fly lol

lol na course not, I will be more than happy if I am proved wrong but I am sure I wont. Show me songs that are out now and I will gladly pay, most of their tunes have the same bars as they have spat on other tunes, thats just poor imo.
And biggest crew in grime lmfao!!!!!! Even roll deep are better, ALOT!!!

Double IS A HYPE MC, which relates to him being boyed for his 'noises' and his greazy content, esp. back in the day - also Jungle and grime two totally different scenes, so being boyed by jungle MCs is a minor in that sense
Is a man in his late 20s gonna talk about bussing gun? He has kids for fuck sake, he aint some hyped yout
Double top 3 selected

get me. Im not trying to start arguments but for the last few years I have heard people going on about how good they are and as the years went by I just couldnt understand the hype. They released a mixtape which was shit! D's mixtape was one of the worst things I have ever heard and I personally have never heard anything from them that I would ever bother listening to again except a set or two.

true, there is a lack of material. but this year SHOULD be the year they prove themselves to the doubters
Molecules
1st February '08, 09:36 PM
Dig alot of Footsie's productions, but what little Gens material is out is poorly mastered. They're in their element live methinks, or on the radio over some fat wobbly dubs.
They have written some classic hooks though...sum new track on Logan sounded like it was trying to recapture that hype of old.

I like the Gens, so I'll stick up for them, plus like I said I think they're the best grime crew so of course I'll try and put my view across
Acknowledge though that what you have said is in itself controversial, so don't 'lol' me when I disagree with you
OK then let's look at their recent material that we've heard:
1) Move To The Beat - mellow, but good tune and one that could well gain wider attention
2) My Life - huge tune imo (I know some will disagree) - Double's absolutely murders it with his 16, straight wheel from bare DJs who play the tune when he spits
3) Murked Again - dunno if it will be on their album, but big tune, again Double's bars and Foots' are good
I've come to appreciate Double evn more recently - he can seem like a sinmple MC but he can kill it on radio (grime, dubstep, jungle), he is a good DJ, and he leads the way on tunes as well, which is improtant
He is one of the best artists ever to have graced this scene frankly

My friend if you have taken offence to anything I have said I am sorry as I meant nothing by it (no bread)
I am not hating on them in any way and purely made this thread so people like yourself could show me what all the hype is about. From browsing their myspaces I still beleive that my thoughts are justified though.
I suppose all we can do is await their album and hope it proves wrong.
But one last thing, if they are as good as you say, they should not have taken so long to release their material because good artists should have bags of quality tunes to pick from, 3 years is a very long time to not release anything if you are top 3 selected is it not?

I'm not offended in any way by what you've said, not in the sense of insulted
People have their views this is a forum innit, I was just bemused
Despite that you have a legitimate point about recent content - it has been to long, and Best of Newham Generals mix CD was poor.
BUt they have a huge catalogue of songs, and I'm talking bangers - back to 95, since when, things I gotta do, violence - listen to an average Tubby set, huge tunes and a shit load of them
Their unique as well with the dubstep influence going on, which I think is innovative and fresh - the Newham Generals are too large

Not slewing, but this is an interesting thread so I wanna post again. You have your views, and I respect that, but still allow this sly tone and saying my oinion is effectively void cos my avatar is of Double. You said originally you expected people to disagree with you, so whats the deal
Monkstarr left the crew, thats why they cant release those songs. Monkey had such a distinctive style, and in a small crew anyway it was gonna have a massive effect. That is part of the reason for the delays, along with joining a new label, and Dizzee was focussing on his third album, along with his touring and other commitments

lol, appologises bruv I do sometimes contradict myself in arguments, I just like arguing and will sometimes contradict myself to try to make myself right.
The fact still is that up until now I have not heard anything to show me that their hype is deserved.

Their mixtape has been the most anticipated for the last 3 years mate so im not having that. Non of those tune were classics, dont give me the wait for the mixtape talk, look at skepta, didnt live up to the hype and for this to live up to the hype it is going to have to be boy in the corner special. Judging by what I have heard from them they are going to have to become better mc's before this mixtape/album becomes a classic. I will be waiting to make a thread to either appoligise or slew as soon as it comes out, just you wait and see.

I don't understand the hype at all.
I understand that they have come up with classic material in the past, and that D has a very unique flow.
But away from 2003 and into 2008 what are they bringing to the table.
This album has been 4-5 years in the making.
I have doubts about what they can do to be honest.

I agree with this.
The only reason why people still hype about the gens is because they have not put out anything yet, therefore no one can say anything bad about them other than they are long.
A full time artist should take no longer than 12 months to put out an album.

I agrree with the topic starter. D double was so much better few years back. Footsie is also pretty basic and not up to levels today. His productions are good but I barely even care what they do nowadays because to me they are pretty boring to me.

lacking material and tons of potential
its grimes big problem (?), but i like to hav ppl like dat. u gta feel it wen they do radio, join the hype as the show goes on etc.
same with jonson from cb, shiesty from gg, roachee and few other ones.
fact dat dey aint got absolutely no material or hav sum shit dat nowhere lives up to the hype of dere name doesnt mean dere overrated. certain mans jus cant be put on a cd.

I dont no why all ppl ever go on about is the "depth of his lyrics" lets be honest its not like theres any papoose's or nas' or biggie's in the grime scene.
Newham generals are unique they spit catchy bars over heavy beats.
