Never been as excited before, there's no favourites anymore, anybody can win and England have a better chance than ever since 1966. Gonna be good.

This England team is very poor.

No set goalkeeper, two CB's who have had a lot of issues this year, no holding midfield player, only 1 quality striker.

Cant wait for the world cup, I think I saw every game at the Euro's bar one, wont see as much this time.

The goalkeeper slot is an issue granted, but this is the world cup..them off field positions should be put aside, on form both Rio & Terry are quality, in terms of talent were up there with the best

Terry looks like he will be sorted, but the old issues regarding pace are there

Rio has been a shadow of himself this year, his back injury has really slowed him down.

Glen Johnson is very mediocre at defending

Lennon/Walcott has been injured for half the year and both are yet to produce consistence performances for England, although I prefer Lennon.

What to do with Gerrard, it appears like he will play on the left which is a waste of him and means our midfield will continue to be unbalanced. If he and Lampard play in the middle then we know it doesnt work

Partnering Rooney there is a choice of Peter 'jump with my arms' Crouch, Emile 'Cant score for Toffee' Heskey or Jermain 'can only do well as a sub' Defoe.

You could argue this is Englands worst world cup team since 86. Rooney and Capello apart there isnt much to cheer about.

Can't see England doing anything of note really, even with a good manager. Far too many problems all over the pitch, only really Ashley Cole, Rooney and Lampard going in off the back of a good season.

Spain are the favourites, Brazil are a unit, Holland have an incredible midfield and attack (shame about the back four), Argentina have quality everywhere (shame about the manager), Italy and Germany shouldn't be written off as they just grind out finals.

Can't wait for the start, fancy Serbia as a shock team.

Anything of note? so what they have to get to the final to go in your red book?

Too many problems all over the pitch? Where exactly, you didnt point out. Left mid is the only problem tbh, Gerrard says the england lads have called it the Grave yard shift for many years, not sure how thye think of now with capello, thats why I think A Young should have atleast been in the 30, just to have a natural left man. We have rooney who is amongst the best 2 or 3 players in the world and a ugly beast in Heskey who loves bringin mids and rooney in, Crouch's rec speaks for itself, Defoe scores goals, no problems in Attack. We have healthy competition for central mids with a few players who can run games, on the right we have plenty of pace, plenty of flair no problems there. Ashley cole (or maybe Evra) is probably the best Left back in the world, we have Terry and Rio who are 2 of the best defenders around, period. Right back we have Glen Jhonson who is great going forward and then James a great keeper. A proven don in a gaffer, where are all these problems ont he pitch you speak of?

England can win dont fuck about, I fancy Holland on a sly though, dont think spain will win anyway

Ok problems. In goal. David James is not a great keeper, even if you really want him to be. Right back, Glen Johnson isn't brilliant defending, his back up is Jamie Carragher who (while a decent centre back) looks really uncomfortable on the right. Ferdinand has barely played this season, while Terry seems to be getting slower and more accident prone every time he plays.

Midfield - reliance on an average Gareth Barry to get himself fit. If not there is a possibility of Gerrard/Lampard again, which worked so well before. If not, I guess it's Carrick (barely played since being murked against Bayern) or Hudd (good ball player, far too slow). Or Milner played hugely out of position.

Then on the right you have Lennon and Walcott who have also missed huge chunks of the season. I actually don't think the left is too much of a problem, Gerrard fits there better than he would anywhere else in a 442.

Upfront, Rooney is obviously fantastic. But Heskey, for all his donkey work, will not win you a World Cup. I like Crouch, but wonder about him against top top class opposition (swear most of his goals are in friendlies) and really hate his tendency to jump with his arms all over players. Can see him giving away huge amounts of free kicks with that. Defoe and Rooney won't be played together.

Not saying they won't win, but I just can't see it. But blind optimism is cool tho. Safe.

GoodFella
28th May '10, 11:03 AM
blind optimism? the fuck you talkin about?

James is not a great keeper? skeen. Terry and Rio are two of the best defenders on the planet, right or wrong, id say right. Gerrard and Lampard have not worked so well before and Milner being played hugely out of position? do you actually watch or know about football, by the long off all the marks reply id say no. So nevermind.

This isn't England bashing but Fabregas not getting into the Spain team makes me realise how poor the England team is. Look at some of the other top players that don't get into their teams, Cambiasso (?), Henry, Ronaldinho, Benzema, RVN...

@Goodfella, James is a good keeper but an unreliable one. You just know that when the going gets tough, he's gonna balls it up. That's just how he is. Ferdinand is good but there are doubts over his fitness, Terry has looked like Bambi on ice since his escapades with Wayne Bridge's girlfriend were exposed...

Honestly, the side is weak, I can understand fans being very hopeful and eager for England to do well but it's bordering on delusion now, as it is before every major tournament. Just calm down and enjoy the tournament ffs.

quarter finals has to be the target for england. anything better means it will be a very successful campaign.

personally i dont like the way the midfield is set up, i worry about the quality of our keeper, think we are too reliant on rooney for goals and that defoe is nowhere near sharp enough for a world cup. however, there is enough there to get to the last 8.

GoodFella

England have a clear route until the quarters v the french probably, we will get to the semis atleast. the only dilusioned people are the ones saying we wont/dont have a chance of winning it.

Of course they have a chance, but they'd have a realistic chance if they didn't surround themselves with nonsense before a tournament and the media got off their backs and stopped hyping them up and let them do their fucking jobs.

Anyone ever heard what Wenger said about the national team and media? Was something along the lines of, ''they are very strange in England. They say ''we will win the World Cup'' before every tournament, then they lose on penalties and will say ''oh, OK well we will win the next one''. He is right.

Dont write off this brazil team. The 94 team was also workman like and didnt have as much flair as we are used to seeing from them, but that could work in their favour

29th May '10, 09:12 AM
Don't worry boys its only (insert talented team here), we have a clear route to the semis. That logic can apply to any tournament England have played in.

And shit we should have won that game (its the refs fault, David Seaman's fault, the fault of a penalty spot etc).

Capello is the ticket, and there are good players in the squad, so of course there's a chance but I just can't see it.

And yes Milner playing a holding role would be out of position. Like Gerrard and Lampard he plays further forward and prefers doing so, he said this in an interview recently.

It's mad how on one hand, people who say Spurs will get top four every season are dismissed as mugs who know fuck all about football but the same blind faith in England is a desirable national trait.
