Bare people think the term 'road' rap is doesn't fit and music from 'road' rappers should just be called straight uk rap or uk hip hop.
Fuck that.
It's called road rap cah its people from road, sprayin about road activities. UKHH is more about tryna show off lyrical ability imo.
UK hip hop is people like jehst, lowkey and kyza. Road rap is man like trips, young spray, strapzy etc..
It's a whole different scene, with different rappers and producers.
Comparison:
I walked in a saloon at high noon, the moonshine sipper
Spit a new rhyme till it's asta la vista
The king balloon twister, smash your transistor
"It's the High Plains Drifter", that had to resist the
Sickness of the city life, I sat by the river
A packet of Rizzler and a flask full of liquor
Made the locals ask: "who's the masked figure?"
Fill a page with the pain it seems you can't picture

Most certainly, I aint gonna stop on just 30 key
S west 8, dirty dirty g.
But kindness is weakness, I'm done wid da kinder days
Mac10 will ring like a microwave
I'm tryna bade, same time I'm tryna save
Smokin on a pound of haze,

This is my code,

If you can have hip hop and gangsta rap in america, then you can have ukhh and road rap here.

we all know it's hip-hop/rap if you look on a wider scale. Like he said though a sub-genre of hip-hop is 'gangster rap' no one complains about that.

Everyone country has it
French Hip-Hop
French Rap
and then theres French Gangster Rap
German Hip-Hop
German Rap
German Gangster Rap
Road Rap is something different and its more related to the roads, you should be happy that ain't just calling it "English Gangster Rap" or even worse "UK Gangster Hip-Hop"

Alie, got a little ring to it, alliteration (English Language - C grade).
Plus in the US post N.W.A was more mafia like music, Biggie, Jay-Z, 2Pac had the 'MOB' mentality.
Inner-City UK are more on the roads doin' there ting, not sayin' we don't have big aspirations but it's more of a close to home vibe if you know what i mean.

Chipmunk and Master Shortie are classed as "Rap" to most people..
they also win "Rap" awards
"Road Rap" artists are nothing like them wasted guys

I think its simply cos in the UK there was no road/greeze/gangster type of rap at all. And now this new wave is here it had to be seperated from what was there initially
Its not a matter of purposely being pedantic and puttin things in different boxes for the sake of it

gangster rap is recognised as a subgenre of hip-hop though, not as a completely seperate kind of music.
i don't disagree with distancing the road rap scene from uk hip-hop one, as it benefits basically everyone. but they are two takes on the same genre.

PDC and Slew Dem were making rap way before the term 'road rap' came into use, so were Roadside G's
All of them are gang affiliated.

Roadside and Slew Dem were predominantly grime and PDC were completely blocked and outcasted from the UKHH scene cos they never had degrees in anthropology lol
The truth is giggs and a lot of rappers in the road rap scene were spitting for years before as well but no one was given room in the ukhh scene so now the new wave has taken over and the streets define it road rap lol @ ukhh fans tryna be inclusivist all of a sudden

yeah what I'm saying is the term road rap has only come about since it became more popular
so really it isn't needed
if I tell someone I listen to rap in a discussion about UK music they won't immediately think of Jehst and Braintax cos most ppl have never heard of those guys, also they associate rap with street subjects anyway because of US rappers.

think it's an o.k. name, not as good/original as Grime but tbh any name any1 cums up with for this uk gangsta rap will be deemed as shit tbh. OP's explanation was very good and even though I used 2 str8 think the Lowkey, Akala type guys were so much lyrically better than Giggs et al, i'm thinkin now, are they?

don't matter if theyre not on road anymore, genres are to do with music and not personality.
a lot of UKHH heads from back in the day were "on road" but they didn't spit about it.
there's metal bands from the ends like Bun Dem Out and Knuckledust all consisting of predominantly black "road" people, but you don't call it Road Metal.
the gangsta rap - hip-hop comparison was spot on.

People like Universal Soldiers, 12 Stone, Skeme and Big P were making straight up UKHH with fully road content in late 90's/early 00's, different style of beats, different way of riding them, same content.
Ehk-UtnK05o
I think there's a stylistic difference between that tune and the current wave of artists, if someone tells you an artist is Road Rap you know what you're going to get, so in that sense it's useful, but it's really just gangsta rap from the UK when it comes down to it.
