As i was listenin to the Ice Kid freestyle today the thought occured to me... in twenty or even ten years time will i really be still bumping this in my car with my wife next to me and kids in the back!!!
I wouldnt wanna hear the exploits of chavs and hooligans....would I.
Will grime have to evolve with its ageing fanbase or would i simply decide to stop listening to grime?
I really dont know

True. But wouldn't Grime get newer fresh listeners? You will always have kids talking about guns. Take Rap for an example, you have the youngers on the street talking about guns etc. But you can relate to other rap artists like 50 for example.

True. But like Jammer said "Grime is gutter music." Kano is grime, you can listen to him. Mind you can you really see Grime being in a position that it is now in 10 years?

Kano is pop music to me now. His mixtapes are grime, but they're not even meant to be heard by the mainstream, come like some hidden personality shit.
Grime isn't targeted at older listeners, it's targeted at people of similar age to the artists, 15-20 year olds ish. To sells more units, and grow it's fan base, grime needs to expand it's range of subjects and cover topics that older listeners care about.
However, it's fucking difficult for a 17 year old MC living at home with mumsy to talk about the stress of a working life, living alone and feeling un-needed by the world etc. because he hasn't been through such experience.
It's a kinda catch 22 situation.

I listen to music that reflects where I'm at in life really, and a lot of club music. I imagine the older I get the more chillout I'll need to listen to though.

ye course.
sometimes the talk is pure bullshit and you know it but often its insightful like that ice kid - water it down track.
that track gets bare plays because at some point in our lives we all feel like the way hes expressing himself in that track. we all get down and cold hearted at times in our life. so i'l always be able to relate to tracks like that if their presented in the right way.
you get the idea that while he was writing that track he just wanted to let his feelings out and i think that, as long as the track is written honestly you'll never get too old for tracks like that.

Why though? Becuase you can believe it? I don't believe hardly any MC's shoot man and that, so it makes no difference, they all bullshitting. Secondly, youngers seem to be the ones carrying the guns nowadays anyway.

This is the environment grime artists are from, so I would expect them to talk greaze to some extent
Its when they can't write about anything else or chat shit is when it becomes more of a problem for me

you saying that when you was his age you never said any of that stuff or felt the way he probably felt when writing them bars?
listen to ice kid - water it down that was on prancehalls page and tell me you cant relate with what hes saying or his state of mind when he wrote that

another thing as well is that you feel that hes being really honest, like hes lletting his feelings out or something
i seriously cant wait for his cd if every track provides an insight into his life like that track does

Exactly, I think thats why I find his bars interesting
He should up the levels more, but he makes tunes as an outlet for his anger so you get the feelings more when he does go studio - Chipmunk is bland now after 3 promos and 3 mixtapes for me in comparison
I've said it before and I'll say it again - Ice Kid has the vest content out of all the grime scene youngers

i agree. chipmunk seems to be making music for the sake of it, for the sake of making money which means that it aint as hard hitting because he cant always have something interesting to say.
ice kid seems to do it for himself, to let his feelings out so when he does release a track hes got something interesting and insightful to say on it.
when his cd gets a release i think alot of people will be able to relate to what he says

I'm at that stage now where I can't listen to most of it BUT I think people of all ages could listen to Griminal, Lil Nasty and Devlin and relate what they are hearing to what they read about in the papers with kids killing each other over bullshit, Griminal talking about robbing someone for their Gameboy DS, doesn't sound exaggerated but just shows the mindstate of todays reckless youth

seen, but some classic hip hop such as gangstarr, tribe called quest ect is quite chilled. my boss has a de la soul cd is his car & he's mid 30s. I guess it will be whether you settle down in your 30s or stay as a raver as to whether you still listen to grime

I'm 25 now and still love grime. I don't see that changing for the foreseeable future, but I really can't take 16 year old gun/shank bars seriously. I dont care if it's real. They should be concentrating on coming out with some real, fucked content instead of resorting to the tried and tested "reh reh flick out the ting and bore ya" bars.

ok ice kid spits emotional and stuff and whatever everyone else is saying,
but i dont rate him. end of.
there is no reason i would choose to buy a cd from ice kid instead of a cd from griminal/double s/little narsty.
i dont want to listen to a little kid talkin about shanks whether hes got one or not, because to be honest most people have carried a shank once in their life on roads so what makes him so fuckin special. doesnt mean he's greeze enuf to use it.
