This is just an idea i had. There is a chance it will not happen but if you guys here give me good feedback I'll try it. Anyways here it is:

Ill purchase Grime albums directly from the artist for what ever they'll charge UK Record Shop or any independent store. You will then go onto my website and if i get enough artists on it there will be a decent selection. Then i will offer many different ways to pay. So if you or a friend don't have a debit/credit card you will still be able to purchase them from my site.

The ways to pay will be:
Credit/Debit card
UK Post Office Postal Order
Cheque (Although the wait would be longer

If you send either a postal order or a cheque, there will be an form that you can download from my site. Or you can always write it onto a piece of A4 paper in eligible handwriting.

I will only charge whatever the Post Office will charge me for sending the CD to you. And the envelope of course!

My profit will be earned by adding about 50 pence to whatever the artist charges me.

Focus: Will this work? Would you buy from me? Any other ways to accept cash?

Depends how cheap you can do it ... UKRS offers some crazy deals just to get the exclusives.

Basically, you're just setting up UKRS mk 2 with a few extra payment options?

Basically you're making a new online shop? Yes i've said this. The advantage this shop has is the other payment methods. And good service.

Fair enough. I personally think more high street shops are needed in the scene, but all the best to you if you do end up doing this.

Bank transfer is another method of payment.

/\ i would use it.

I don't need to earn a great profit like other record shops. I have money. The chances of me making a lot out of this is about 6%. I'm doing it for the love of grime and the way it is being exploited.

You do realise you'd need to approach it like a proper business startup? You can't just buy some CDs with birthday money and sell them.

The tax man WILL come one day.

You need to register the business name and address, invest in insurance ... you can't run a business from rented accomodation either, so unless you're living where someone who owns the house doesn't care, you're fucked.

I could create an amazon account and sell from there. That way theres no tax involved.

With eBay and Amazon stores you are supposed to pay tax you know, it's just some people don't.

Steez
26th January '08, 05:15 PM
Yeah yeah cool, same with eBay ... just wondered if you'd thought it through like, cuz most people don't think of stuff like that.

You got room to stock everything you need - envelopes, boxes of CDs, a computer etc.?

3 decent sized rooms. Computer with broadband. Barclays over the road :)

Could i accept postal orders and cheques. Pay into another account. Buy off myself then post? Or is that fraud?

Steez
26th January '08, 05:22 PM
LOL fair play

Go for it BUT UKRS ain't gonna let u do it lol, they're gonna fight hard plus they already have relationships with a lot of the artists and labels

Alfie
26th January '08, 05:24 PM
Lol true. It would still make them up their levels which would benefit grime :)

Steez
26th January '08, 05:30 PM
Maybe. Depends what you can get though.

If I was UKRS, and a new site similar to mine was starting. I'd be willing to offer artists a better deal per unit (effectively me losing a small amount more than usual) to ensure it never went to your shop, or it did so a long time after.

And similar tactics ... the thing with UKRS now is the affiliations they have - they are in a VERY strong negotiating position.

REALLY, you need to come with something extra ... a few pence here or there, and good service ain't gonna make many people change from a site they been using for 3 years you know what I mean?

Alfie
26th January '08, 05:39 PM
Yeah they're in such a strong position.
UKRS could match any deal i do.
Unless my good old friend Lee Brasco does me a couple of favours :)

Steez
26th January '08, 05:43 PM
lol, it's always been true - it's not what you know, but who you know.

Wiz
26th January '08, 05:51 PM
more importantly it's what you're bringing to the table, methods of payment is not enough and claiming to have good service is one thing, but having it is another,

you will have to have customers saying you have good service compared to others, it's no use that information coming from you because you're hardly going to be saying you have bad service are you?

Free stuff is always good to attract business, even if its not something people need. Maybe you could burn old radio sets onto cd and give them away free with orders? It's not like theres really gonna be copyright involved with old pirate radio rips and blank cds are cheap in bulk...

Steez

Or do what UKRS do and pay Logan or a big DJ for a mixtape and then burn copies as a free giveaway

Do it monthly, not just for xmas or whatever - doesn't cost THAT much
