View Full Version : are grime artists doing enough promotion?

Within the scene itself i think most of them are, however i dont think they do enough to get new fans. i mean the only reason i found grime was because i looked for it as i wasnt feeling much else.
I think this makes it hard for grime to spread as its seemingly driven more by the fans (Grimepedia etc) rather than artists or labels.
Chipmunk seems to be doing well getting onto a few TV shows and doing that i love live thing. and Wiley is obviously reaching a wider audience with Rolex but its still not promoting grime.
There are so many good grime tunes out there that could probably do well as singles, if they had proper releases and promotion.
I think there needs to be more networking done and especially wiley now should push the sound to the bigger radio DJs, push it in interviews and get grime wave out there. may be a turning point.
Do you think artists need to do more and what could they do?

they should advertise their albums like put it on tv, not just chu, but itv, channel four, mtv and there needs to be more videos, thats why on djtakeover:grime its just the same vids: forward, oi, duppy....more videos

They should make songs about stopping gun crime, and curry favour from the likes of Peaches Geldof...

Not sure man...
Usually managers and/or labels take care of this sort of thing but realistically hardly any artist have this type of support.
I think, for up and coming artists in the current state the scene is in, a business minded approach is all that is needed

i agree, ithink JME has done very well on this side, keeping the fans interested via myspace and freebies, but i guess we wont see if this pays off until the album drops. the will be skewed tho by the couple thousand albums sunjay buys

it needs street teams handin out ep's dat are free for example devlin the devz ep etc posters dotted around raves up and down the country not just in the local area tv adverts radio adverts etc or else grime will be like this forever

can see that working. but i remember getting cds free before and just throwing them. gives the effect of 'if its free it must be shit'.
for more TV and radio advertising the artists would have to have a fair bit of money for it to be effective.
i think there should be more events like sidewinder but with other genres involved to maybe attract a wider audience. then maybe the artists will be able to showcase their talent, but then people will start argueing that 'grime doesnt need indie fans or piggybacks from other genres' when clearly it cant do any harm if you are associated with the right people.

didnt think of that. made me realise that it ostracizes some grime fans seeing people they dont know on the flyer so maybe works the same the other way round.

having a decent manager is the main point. Someone with experience in the industry or who's smart enough to know what they should be doing

so what if it costs bare money, thats what you expect when you join the grime scene you're not gonna make p straight away anyway its money well spent. skepta should've made a video for single, and if it costs too much money they should be like bashy and become bus drivers.

whoring yourself to the mainstream is not the same as promoting yourself properly.

no, i dont think any artist has done enough "worthwhile" promotion. theres so many good tunes being done, which i could hear on any radio station (not 1xtra) but theyre just not being put out enough. but i dunno maybe they are, and that just comes back to the concept of people not wanting grime to break through :s

Fucking hell I didnt realise this thread went so of course, especially as it had potential.
Mostly started when Godfather felt to call Dollie a slut for no reason, other than disagreeing with her points, so he's recieved a warning for that.
Everything else since then gets a bly, as most of it was sticking up for her, but it will be seperated from this thread.

its obvious from the fact there is no grime in the charts that no grime artists are either doing the right or enough promotion. either that or their music is shit or not grime.
The only way grime artists have hit the charts is through changing the music they are doing. which imo will not lead to the long term growth of grime.
