Okay, I receive the impression there's this general assumption that you have to think your gangster and act like a bad man to be a grime MC, so when MC's fit into this style but don't necessarily sell drugs or get into trouble because they're fuck ups or born into that life people try to expose who they really are and declare them fake... this is music, what the fuck? if you can mc about something you don't have to do it do you UNLESS YOU SAY YOU DO IT.. I'd say it's pretty obvious that the term "fake MCs" is used to adress those who spit gunman/gangster bars simply because that's what they think you have to do to be taken seriously as a grime MC, even though they've never used a gun in their lives.

The irony of this is that it is the MCs that don't spit about guns and knives who have winded up as the most successful. The reason Boy In Da Corner sold so well wasn't that Dizzee came across as a real badman, but rather that he had real stories to tell about life in the streets of London which people could relate to. At the end of the day, who's gonna sign a guy with a shank or a guy with a 9mm?

It is also quite ironic that grime MCs insist on flaunting how big they are on crime. Wouldn't a real gangster prefer to not draw attention to his criminal activities so that he can keep making moves unhindered? Making a tune like Ghetto - Commandments or posing on youtube with a glove shouting "bang bang" to the camera would be pretty counterproductive in that regard.

So, what it all boils down to is this: why do grime listeners get so much hype from someone spitting about stabbing people? Ultimately, I think this is what makes some people think they have to put on a badman act to get somewhere as a grime MC.
