Is this video new?

Better than your average grime video, but out of Frisco back catalogue, this would have been bottom of my list of tunes to make a vid for

sample = sum soulful ting, how many grime tracks sample soul?

how many hip hop tunes sample soul?

drums = half time accoustic drum kit............. aka HIP HOP

no one cares what it is

Frisco is a grime artist, Wiley is a grime artist and pioneer of the sound

As soon as someone experiments ppl say 'its not grime'

and people then wonder why the sound doesn't evolve

just let them make music

then when some1 who dont kno wot grime is listens to this 4 the first time, they'll go round thinkin grime is rap at 140 wiv soft female vokals and guitars..

woteva init

FG
18th March '08, 09:04 PM
well they won't listen to one song, there is much more high-profile and well-known songs that are perceived to typify the grime sound

Weren't having a go at you in particular but this 'its grime, its not grime' talk gets on my nerves sometimes

Yeah if someone does hip hop and they flop, or they do something else and its not as good as when they do grime I can understand, but esp. nowadays the youngers grew up on hip hop and not garage. Rap is a inherent part of the average grime artist's musical upbringing nowadays, so its gonna be reflected in the grime scene

frisco is 26/27 still

FG
18th March '08, 09:18 PM
But he listens to hip hop I would imagine

The tune was from a mixtape that had 'Back Wid a Bang', 'Wos Poppin', and 'Grime Music' to name some from the top of my head

To me, grime is a music that takes influences from many genres, and when sometimes one or more of those influences is more apparent on a track than others its not 'grime'

Doesn't really make sense to me

Youngstar used an 808 drum kit to make Pulse X, but loads of Techno/House producers used it before him, so that mean that Pulse X was Techno, is that right?

No

And the tune if very lo-fi and minimal...so of course the drums are going to be acoustic, it suits the rest of the beat.
If wiley had used his original drum-kit it with his trademark snare, the beat would be (a) any Wiley beat (b) wrong on many levels of basic music production

i thought u made a tiny bit of sense till that end bit.
theres no such thing as rules, and real musicians DONT follow levels of basic music.

if the drum sequencin on pulse X was the same as techno id say yes, but becuase it wasnt the answer is obviously no.

tune is alrite.. but for his first video he shouldve put something out that represented him and grime a little more... closer to rnb than hip hop id say personally if you had to categorise it... is it me or does the video seem to be lacking lighting in certain places as well?

I never said anything about 'rules', but any good producer knows that if you are creating a lo-fi beat you need lo-fi drums all about the mood and atmosphere you are trying to create with the music

Drums from (for example) Jammer - Destruction would not sit well in the mix of that track and would over-power the rest of the beat, no matter how much EQ or compression was added to it. As well as taking away the slow sombre mood of the rest of the track.
You don't even have to know anything about music to see this

EDIT: ALSO, I don't think there is anything in that beat pattern that is reminiscent of what I call HH
AND between the late eightys to the present day bare Techno producers have used drum sequencing taht would not sound out of place in a grime beat

Nah I wouldn't say it is Grimey in the way Big ED - Frontline was grimey, doesn't mean it doesn't come under the 'Grime' bracket

But I don't like the way people dissmiss something as Grime just because it uses a soul sample and USHH uses soul samples, cos on a real its nothing like a Kanye/Dipset pitched up to shit sample, which is nothing what I know Hip Hop as.
