too lyrical?

I dunno if I worded that right to get a discussion started aiming at what I'm thinking but like

Soulja Boy. Some popular shit. Not amazingly lyrical, but hype, works in a club, sold a hell of a lot of ringtones etc.

Ghetto. Popular guy. Quite lyrical, very hype, doesn't really get played in a club etc. etc.

Does anyone even see where I'm going with this?

Like, club music, basic shit like Crank Dat works because people don't go out to listen to 64 bars of triple sendage super metaphors ...

Is this affecting grime's mainstream appeal?

Another example, POW was big. That was fairly basic, hookline stuff. Easy to learn, sing and pick up.

i see what you mean. only really old fashioned hip hop heads really criticise grime for being like that (from past experience anyway). i dont think it makes much difference

not really grime like hip hop has things to suit everyone from basic bars where u can sing along like skepta
to people with deep bars like ghetto

I hear what your saying.

Pop music is generally 3-4 yrs behind underground music.
That said I think tracks like.

Crazy Titch "Sing a long" could work now ,because of it's simplicity imo.

Did Singalong not make a big impact anyway? Although, yeah, I think it would go further now.

But also stuff like Hype Hype got far because of the simplicity

IT WEREN'T EVEN ABOUT whats lyrical and whats not . when i think back how all them decent/good beats on treddin on thin ice were ruined by wiley it makes me shudder.

Real,

There's definitely room for a balance.

The one line flows had that dancehall catchiness.

Too much multis in fast skippy bars are inaudible in a rave..
Thats one of the main reasons Ghetts never wins a clash and why I still cant sing the hook to "Top 3 Selected"

soulja boy might be making money, but he's not respected. i guess whats more important to be respected and make little money or make loads of money and have no respect

one line flows were good for hype, which is/was the primary role of the emcee in grime. I'm not saying everyone should use them all the time, but i prefer to hear a hype bar using a one line flow than a sub-par verse by someone with limited lyrical ability

16th March '08, 06:55 PM
i think a bit of one line flow within somthing decent lyrically adds to a tune , its quite rare il listen to a grime set / track full of content - as its usually sub par , content+one line flows means it can be catchy plus deep.

last point:
hip hop was too lyrical when it first started, and when it entered its golden age (before it became materialistic) it made a lot of money, why can't grime be the same?

Wiley's one line flow on 'kicked out the game' gets me ridiculously hype

They're ok in moderation

Grime is certainly becoming more lyrical, away from the raves and onto digital format, albums and that.

Since the grime scene has a problem making good songs, lyricism is a better way of dealing with things

Grime will be UK Hip Hop in 5-10 years imo (if its not already)
