Fresh of the back of his latest mixtape “365″ I caught up with South London based MC Young Slaughter to speak about his latest CD, future project’s and who he’d like to work with..
Me: Right..to start, tell us when you 1st got into music and why you decided to start MC’ing..
Young Slaughter: I first got in to music when I was like 15, with a group of friends from school. At first it was a joke ting but as the years went on I started to take it more serious although before I started MC’ing I always used to listen to old school rap like 2 pac n that.
Me: Yeah 2pac is highly followed…but who influenced you to make grime ?
YS: Yeah 2pac’s the best..the people who influenced me to make grime are obviously people like Wiley, Crazy Titch, old school nasty crew from the De Ja Vu days and that. I used to listen to the local MC’s in the area as well they was also an influence !
Me: Yeah the locals help alot…a few months have passed since you released your 1st in-store mixtape “365″ what sort of feedback have you had ?
YS: Yeah I released 3.6.5 late February, the feedback I’ve had so far has been so far so good. The local lot like it and the people from other areas that have bought it like it as well so I havn’t had any negative feedback yet lol but I’m still pushing that CD now so if anyone wants a copy they can holla at uptown records for that.
Me: Well I had people from Bristol hollering for it so you must of done something right ! So now 365 is settling down, what more can we expect from you ?
YS: Yeahh if people from Bristol are hollering that’s a good look, I’m reaching different areas. Well the next thing you can expect is the Ardest Barrerz CD Ragz. Vol 2 which should be out in the next couple of months and I’m working on my new CD but I ain’t gonna talk about that too much yet ‘cos I ain’t that far into it but I’m in the studio working hard right now so I’ll let you know more about that CD soon.
Me: That last point “im reachin different areas”, do you think MC’s are stuck too much within there own ends i.e they refuse to work with people from opposite sides of the river (or beyond.) ?
YS: Yeah some MC’s are stuck within their own ends which is not a good look ‘cos then it’s harder to expand and get fans in other ends…so they end up as local MC’s and don’t get heard further then the local lot.
Me: I hear that. It’s fair to say your still up and coming, are there any other MC’s still tryna get through that you’ve seen and thought “oh I’d like to work with them” ?
YS: Hmmm nah not that I can think of right now you know.
Me: What about the more established artists ? Who would you most like to collaborate with ?
YS: Yeah obviously I would like to work with a couple of the big dogz in the game I think you know who I’m talking about !! That’s why I gotta put in the work and get to a certain position.
Me: I see i see. It’s June the 1st today, did you go and buy any of the 3 CD’s ?
YS: You know what I was supposed to go and buy Wiley’s and Skepta’s today but I was at college all day and there’s no CD shop like that in my endz so its gonna have to be a tomorrow thing but I’m deffo gonna cop them !
Me: Whos you gonna pick up 1st ?!
YS: I’m gonna grab Wiley’s first still…
Me: Well thanks for taking time to speak to me, any shout out’s ?
YS: It’s cool fam anytime…and yeah hold tight my Ardest Barrerz Mischief, Kozzie, hold tight SNK, Z Dot, Amazer, Blacks, P Money and Little Dee doing alot as well and obviously big up yourself frankstah ‘cos your suppoting the ting right now. Hold tight the Grimeforum, fuck all the haters, watch out for Ragz 2 and if you ain’t got 3.6.5 go cop that now !!!!

After recently dropping his free promo, I caught up with South London MC Kid Bookie, to check out his views on the scene, the South Soldiers situation and what the young up and comer has got in store for us next !
Me: So Kid Bookie…give us a little bit about yourself..
Kid Bookie: I’m just an MC from South London, Greenwich sides, looking to be a respectable member of the scene really.
Me: I see. A lot of people said they wasn’t feeling you after your appearance on Westwood, but opinions certainly changed when you dropped your promo “In The Making”, how does it feel knowing you’ve swayed people’s perspective ?
KB: It’s good and feels healthy to know when I put in the work it gets noticed. But its a downer on some sides as I first like got heard on Westwood’s show last year September with hood stars Dot Rotten and Voltage, and didn’t show my ability, people will remember and try not to give me a second chance, so I have a lot of potential fans to persuade really.
Me: Do you feel the listeners are all to ready to jump on mistakes then or is it there right?
KB: It goes down to who your most familiar with, people like to hear familiar voices, so when a new voice comes in its hard to really capture the audience as they feel more in tune to artists they already know. If you heard me from last year times and locked off from listening to me since then you won’t see the improvements, but if you have recently got into me I guess its easier to change opinions as I’m in the process of mastering my flow and writing in general which always makes me improve gaining more of a fan base.
Me: Ok I heard that. So now you’ve dropped your promo what can we expect next ?
KB: Well to be honest, it was slightly half hearted with old tunes and new material, but my next project is a little EP called ”Aftershock” featuring local MC’s from my part of south like P Money, Jendor, Little D, Dot Rotten, Desperado and then out of the ends MC’s like Lee Brasco, Scru face and more. I’m putting in a lot of time and effort as I’m getting a lot of positive comments on the Myspace, youtube videos of me and fans on the MSN, so its giving me a better push. Obviously I still have the potential listeners so hopefully this new project can open a lot of ears for me and more support in the music.
Me: Well it’s nice to see you working with McCs off your own ends, did the locals provide your inspiration for MC’ing or did you find it elsewhere ?
KB: Definitely locals, spitting is still fairly new to me, started 2007 around march times, always listened to it before though, had P Money, Desperado, Gully Rainjah on repeat during school times, as they were local it was fairly easy to see them. Once I started I did one of my first tunes with P Money, and then met up with Firmer Dee did a few tunes and then met up with Desperado, he was a big part for me as he definitely was a strong influence to me, he recruited me to South Soldiers and I became more aware of the scene giving me an insight to more MC’s which I gained more knowledge about, Dot Rotten as well was an inspiration, definitely pushed me a lot in my music, a lot of love for that.
Me: As people may or may not no, you’re no longer with South Soldiers, what happened there ?
KB: Umm .. haha, well it came down to I think, getting to complacent within the group .. I stopped really putting effort in and sitting back, and despa and the rest were always working pushing the group, I was just generally being a wasteman sitting under your local lamppost bunning a joint, so he basically had a deep talk with me and decided what was best, was also going through a madness with the family, and shit just wern’t going good.
Me: Oh I understand, what’s your current view on the grime scene ?
KB: It’s strong and weak in some ways. Well in my opinion, strong for a lot of the top MC’s are all pushing each other getting a lot of there material around the whole of the UK but weak as in no one really wants to work with each other, that’s where I’m trying to break that, one tune on my CD called ”Bars & Flows”. I had the idea to just bring different ends together, with Double S from north, Voltage from East, Youf from south west, and Jendor and Mega from South East, unity is better and everyone working with everyone structures a scene and pushes it forward.
Me: Yes “Bars & Flows” has had some big feedback, was it complicated getting all them MC’s into the studio ?
KB: Na not really, I just basically rang them and said when your free go studio and record a 16 on the beat took around a few weeks or so as the line up changed so many times, Ice Kid was originally on it, Little D, Scru Face, Vertex, Dot haha it was a madness..
Me: Ahh I see I see. Bars & Flows was produced by Z Dot, is he one of your fav’s and do you have any producers where you think “oh if I work with them that’ll be sick ?
KB: I rate Z Dot he’s always had a bigger outlook for me, I’m glad to push him and yee, I want to work with Joker and Silencer, hard producers, but I do enjoy working with one up n comer called SickWun (VERY HARD), Skeamz and Dot Rotten as well are producers I enjoy working with and lacing there beats.
Me: Ok. What about MC-wise, anyone you’d like to collaborate with ?
KB: J2K, Manga, there’s quite a number .. hopefully I can get to them in the future.. I should be doing a few vocals of Wiley’s beats..but that guys to unreliable
Me: Well he is the self proclaimed godfather lol. Do you agree, who’s your top 3 ?
KB: Regardless of what anybody says you gotta respect the clown, Durtty Goodz, Crazy Titch and probably my brother dot, all hard artist’s.
Me: Ok well tanks for taking time out to speak to us, any shoutouts ?
KB: Yeee big up YOU fam , for supporting me, big up Scru Face, Despa, Dot Rotten, 12, Youf, Littles, Jendor, mega big up all the the DJ’s supporting me and boom, keep checking up on me cah i got new things to offer, safe brother.
So there you have it..
