the new Computer Music Special ... all to do with making money from music, specifically using the internet.
For anyone who actually truly cares, and wants to understand why grime doesn't make money, why digi downloads are good and how the business models need to change in order to utilise the internet to take grime further.
COP THIS! and read it.
I swear down, every single page, I thought, yeah, Skepta could do that etc. etc.
There's stuff about free downloads, and free music, and how to make money from them. Other ideas of where and how to make money, which could ALL be used by grime if the ideas were adapted to suit.

grime should be a rave & radio based scene, not an internet based scene

This is also discussed in the issue. As with a lot of other scenes. 360 deals would become a reality if this happened, meaning more grime artists may get approached by majors.

grime doesn't need majors though, its needs a solid underground scene like dubstep & Drum and Bass where raves regularly happen accross the country and the biggest instrumentals & vocals are released as singles, both on vinyl & digitally, whilst they are still hot.

It does need majors if studio recordings will still be released, albums etc. You can't push an album the same way on an indie as a major.
Trouble is with the underground thing, that most of the artists don't ever want to be underground. They're blatantly desperate to be the next Jay-Z on a major, it's just the best viable route.

I'd rather have a club/dj/single orientated scene than a mixtape/album orientated scene. I think its a case of finding the right balance between the two

How does a massive roster of artists make money from a single orientated scene though?
Like you say though, more raves = more live perf. money, it's a good look. Just the fans and their behaviour that's the problem.

Grime may not need majors....but indie labels aren't taking much of an interest either are they?

Boy Better Know is an indie label. Indie labels can basically be yourself as a professional front. Still though, someone else taking control of the professional side is what grime needs, someone clued up.
Alwayz Recording have kind of done it with mixtapes, getting involved in the recording, promo etc. and making sure that the MCs are putting out regular, quality products.

Grime started as an underground scene and will die an underground scene.
Disclaimer: my recent post that mentioned business models was made without even seeing this thread. Purely a coincidence.

Boy Better Know has an individual (Sam/S.B) with experience of A&R and distribution, not that I know exactly what he does for them but believe Boy Better Know is not where it is just because JME and Skepta have put work in.
I dunno what Alwayz Recording is about yet really, whether they can get someone to a good point, guess I'll have to wait 'till they push an album, but they seem to be doing good for themselves so far.

That guy used to work at Essential Direct innit? That Sam guy. He probably has a lot of very good contacts to push BBK, their music and their releases forward. Plus, he probably does a lot of admin work, bookings etc. while Skepta and JME are in studio, which is exactly what is needed really.

I was just on his (S.B) myspace for a second...his background says distribution so it's all that side of things I guess.

I emailed the editor and asked if he could do a grime tutorial last summer and he got back to me and said he would look into it.
Aint copped the magazine for a long time, dunno if he did it or not.

Becuase for a scene whose main fanbase is working class youths in london, they shouldnt have to pay £30 a month to listen to it

because raves & radio capture the raw hype of grime better than anything else. They are the ultimate mediums to experience grime imo

yer, obviously its about getting the balance but i think the main focus should be raves & radio. It seems to be the other way round atm & alot of people only seem to reach radio when they've got something coming out
