It's been a while since I locked in to the charts, and the days when I recorded Daniel Bedingfield's Gotta Get Thru This on cassette. I would sigh heavily when the guy hosting the show would feel the need to talk all over the start and end of the track, mocking my third-rate piracy.

But time changes. Listening religiously to the charts is now part of a hazy childhood nostalgia. Bedingfield now makes soppy ballads. In fact I don't even know if he makes music nowadays - I'm just not very interested.

I've tuned in a bit more recently though - once in a while - to see how our grime acts are faring on the other side.

Boy Better Know's Too Many Man was released this time last week. According to the iTunes store, Too Many Man is #99 in their Top 100 Songs Chart.

iTunes isn't the be-all and end-all for getting music. Fuck it, it's not even the official charts. But #99? For a song that's had wide airplay on the underground for the last three-odd months?

But I think it's a fair achievement. Chipmunk may have reached #22 in the charts independently, and Dizzee Rascal may have shat on the charts from very high above independently, but Too Many Man isn't a Chip Diddy Chip or Dance Wiv Me.

It's an independent grime track and, with its funky elements, an accurate reflection of the scene now. Skepta's Rolex Sweep, despite Busta Rhymes sweeping all over the O2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFZtrJW1iCA) (or wherever it was) and Chris Martin wailing about glasses of champagne while tinkering the piano at a Coldplay gig, got to #92 after release in the iTunes Top 100 Songs Chart. Surely grime music, and underground music in general, can take something from that?

Added to the fact that the single was released a week before both Wiley's 'Race Against Time' and Skepta's 'Microphone Champion', and the track being on both albums, it's not too shabby is it?

Or do I need to brush up on what constitutes mainstream success? If so, I hope it doesn't mean I have to listen to the charts any time soon.http://www.grimeforum.com//blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/5982830412087108769-1451340528666657262?l=fullygrowngrime.blogspot.com

Big read as normal. I liked the song, the tune that came with it didn't do it much justice...

Good little read up tbh.

It took too long to come out, hence the poor showing in the chart.

Fuck waiting a year for tune, no matter how good the tune is.

Nice read.
Been thinking this since I found out the track would be on both albums, silly move IMO.
For the quality of the song, I felt they could of done a lot more with this than they have considering it's getting played in every club I reach + the reaction it gets from the crowd.

The single should have received more publicity.

It is a very radio friendly song, much more than 'dont phone me' or 'sing for me' (to name 2 examples which many on the forum feel should have been seen more publicity).

The tune is big tbh, and should've done better, the hook's widely-recognised, the tunes at a nice pace for those who wouldn't necessarily want to buy or rave to a more aggressive flowing 140bpm, Skepta, Wiley, Jme and Boy Better Know in general have worked hard collectively and individually to build strong fanbases and so despite the obvious reason of him being a bigger artist nationwide, I can't really understand how this has fared so poorly compared to Bonkers.

Decent read though was wondering where your blogging had gone recently or have I just missed it completely lol.

Nah I know I weren't expecting it to rival Bonkers obviously, but to come 100 places behind when from what I hear day to day Too Many Man has alot more hype around it, surprised me abit, was just expecting the tune to do better, like top 40.

iTunes is a problem. It costs too much. People only use iTunes when they don't know or trust other, cheaper sites, like 7Digital, Juno etc.

iTunes be selling albums for £8 when they're 5 or 6 on Boomkat and shit

There needs to be a download chart that collects a whole bunch of shops sales including indie stores

This kinda track will be a good one for DJs I'd imagine, and from what I can gather, most DJs use Beatport and shit like that for high quality, possibly Ableton-ready files

"Watch what Too Many Man and Sunglasses at Night do in 2 double 0 9."

Somehow, i think that Skepta thought it would do better than this. And tbh, it deserved to, even on the strength of Friscos verse. Wow.

Good read. The thing is that with a song like Too Many Man it was very going to break top 40 - it might've been an underground smash, but apart from Mike Sknner posting it on his Twitter, it rarely threatened mainstream radio or non-AKA video channels. So going Top 100 is decent bareing in mind that probably less than 30% of those people who liked the song when it was bubbling underground prior to release actually went out and purchased it.

I think everyone was disappointed with the performance of Rolex Sweep though - that was poised to be a relative success and somebody definitely dropped the ball there.

bonkers and chip diddy chip got released within a month of the tune getting out, unlike 2 many man and rolex sweep.

Some of us heard it way back in may and the general public heard it back in December so boy what can you expect.

y u comparing too many man to bonkers that's not a fair comparison

are you dumb? one of the points of the article is that we can't compare BBKs releases to Dizzee's.

TBH the only thing I know about the reaction to this tune is 2nd hand. Does it get played in commercial clubs like the oceana's & such?
