Score Five joined Manic FM in late 2005, a popular internet radio station for grime in the period (artists such as Skepta (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Skepta) were regulars at the time). He made the long journey from near Heathrow in London all the way up to St. Albans which is just outside of the M25 to start his career as a grime DJ. In a scene full of people boasting about hard work, having the motivation to make this journey every week to perform is testament to Score Five’s hard work rate.
While featuring on Manic he worked closely with artists such as Random Impulse (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Random_Impulse), Rinse (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Rinse)and Dimples (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Dimples) (G-FAM (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/G-Fam)) during 2006 when they were also carving their own places in the scene. Score Five then linked up with Sketch’E in 2007 to do joint shows on Manic which became very popular, culminating in Pyro Radio (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Pyro_Radio) asking them to join their new project- they accepted.
Their first official show was on January 14th 2008 and it featured Frisco (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Frisco), Cell 22 (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Cel22), Dimples and a then un-known Scrufizzer. This set the pace for the following months of 2008 which saw a lot of MCs featuring on the show including Dot Rotten (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Dot_Rotten), P Money (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/P-Money), Little Dee (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Little_Dee), Desperado (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Desperado), Tempa T (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Tempa_T) and the show was also the first place a lot of people heard Realist (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Realist), Wax, Snoopy (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Snoopy), Germz & MIK (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/M.I.K).
Score Five then debuted on the upcoming UrbanFMTV which started in late 2008, which led to him featuring on sometimes 3-4 radio shows in a week to get his sound out there. His popularity grew rapidly as a DJ with his tight mixing and selection of tunes that was still hard, but a variety from other DJs playing similar tunes at the time.*
This led to the Tim Westwood DJ takeover where he showcased his DJing ability on Radio 1xtra featuring alongside Spooky (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Spooky), Karnage (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Karnage) and Furious. Since the show Pyro Radio saw even more MCs roll through the show including Revolver, Dolla Da Dustman, Scrufizzer and marked the return of Flirta D (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Flirta_D) to radio with the legend featuring on ScoreFive’s UrbanFMTV and Pyro shows.
Grime Digital already had history with Score Five and had worked closely with him on their podcast and other things behind the scenes and this let to us asking him to announce the results of the Grime Forum Awards live on his Pyro Show. This show faetured a Logan Sama (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/Logan_Sama) interview, Ghetto Freestyle (for best MC) and a comeback appearance of the legendary O.T Crew (http://grimepedia.co.uk/wiki/O.T_Crew).
Unfortunately his last ever Pyro show came on March the 9th and featured a exclusive interview with Badness (who had decided to quit grime at the time) and finished off with a massive set from OGs (P Money, Little Dee, Blacks, Amazer, Drifter and Germz) as Pyro Radio turned into an online podcast in light of the recession.
Score Five’s biggest regret was that he never got to do shows that were lined up but cancelled including Durrty Goodz and Newham Generals (http://www.grimepdia.co.uk/wiki/Newham_Generals).
When I spoke to him on the day of the grime awards he told me that the two things he wanted to achieve in grime was to be on Rinse and play out at Sidewinder. He’s conquered his Rinse dream and Spruce has already announced an interest in ScoreFive and Sketch’E for next year’s Sidewinder.
Looks like its time to set some new objectives.
