Kanos new underground grime album!
1xtra have just annouced a new 'underground' grime album by kano
entitled 140 underground to be realsed soon,
he is still unsigned.
any thoughts?
*UPDATE*
Kano's told 1Xtra he's parted company with his record label 679 Recordings.
He says he wants to go back to his grimier roots after two albums with the label.
The UKG rapper says his third mixtape is due out in April.
His highest ever chart entry at no18 was his last single This Is The Girl featuring Craig David.

I wouldn't mind though really if his attitude didn't stink like fart. He comes like he's some worldwide superstar in the interviews.
But at least he doesn't put an advert saying "Grime Busters" at the start of his video.

Dunno why people keep calling him a sellout and shit.
Like say if you was offered the chance to perform in front of thousands of people, with your favourite artists, have top selling albums and millions of people take your music seriously and be able to buy all the shit you always wanted...you'd rather "keep it real" and mc twice a week on a 8th floor pirate and live with your mum with no electricity?
Idiots.
And also, even though you claim Kano's levels have dropped, he would still be a top 5 MC in the grime scene if he came back tomorrow.

Dont think spitting at Sidewinder and Rinse with Wiley is gonna get him re- signed still.
He has a fan base and a decent P now so will always sell records.
He now has the autonomy to do what he wants and the P in the bank to pay off the mortgage so less pressure and the ability to do his prefential music which i feel has always been grime.

Oh yeah, grime, that thing he's refused to acknowledge for the last couple years. He's been pretty antagonistic towards the scene when people have questioned his motives in doing that hiphop wannabe thing.

I dont give a toss if hes signed, unsigned or whatever, or whether he'll use the scene to get big again, it means we're gonna get grimey Kano back again and he'll provide another CD to the expected grime onslaught this year.
For these reasons Im hyped, who cares about the situation he'll be providing us with grime music.

I'd like to hear the real reason from 679's mouth of why they dropped him. Although this is a lesson in its self. Treat the roots that you came from good and give them a little love even if it is in the form of grime mixtapes etc because you never know when you'll need them.

1) If you can name any mc that lives with their mum and has no electricity please do that!
2) No one said spitting on radio on glamorous. But its like robinho who goes to brazil to kik ball on the beach every 2 months. Its a way of keeping your tradition, roots and culture in you. If kano went rinse at least he would test himself regularly and immerse himself back in the scene.
3) Top 5? im not too sure bout dat either hes capable of getting to the top again but he has too hit alot hardewr than he has been recently, come hungrey and humble and prepared to swing it out with ghetts, wiley, p money etc.

Apparently so, and 679 have also been bought by warner (allegedly) so his contract wasn't renewed. It doesn't amount to the same as being dropped, but it leaves him in a similar situation.
Isn't Dizzee out of contract right now too?

No record label will ever admit the reason they parted ways because it will make them & the artist look bad............like they can't handle certain acts or the artist can't sell

I can 100% guarantee when he comes back, no matter how good he is people will hate on him because
a) he won't be a good as before
b) he won't be as road as before
c) he sold out
and if he ever gets in war his rival is going to have a dubs-worth of 'sell-out' cusses, it is going to be hard for him
He will either be better than anyone could expect or will flop majorly

One thing I've noticed about these forums is people analyze the scene too much as if they are actually in it. Like someone said on the first page, if you had that opportunity to perform live infront of thousands of people and make decent albums, good money and be signed, why wouldnt you do it? People on forums think alot differntly to people do on the streets, someone who didn't read forums wouldnt know or care about any of this kano selling out stuff and would just appreciate Kano's music when they hear it. Its not a hating ting because he made some money its just appreciating good music when you hear it.
Not sure if that came out right but still hopefully people can get my drift

Had a look and:
Atlantic Records (a division of Warner, and the people who run 679) say: ’Kano had come to the end of his deal with 679 and decided against picking up the option to continue’
I'm reading that he wasn't offered to sign directly to Warner or Atlantic like he wanted, but to another sub-label, and that they were insistent on a 360 deal and he wasn't keen. This, however, is hearsay until i see it from an official source.

His flow's fell off, blanked the scene, asked if Stageshow was funky house, his "street" mixtape was neptunes beats and gorillaz samples and now he's been dropped for going for the gash market he's back? Nah.

I thought 'the mixtape' was big still
Its hard doing albums and mixtapes, trying to connect with two different audiences - the priority will be greater for one than the other, and when you're trying to diversify on a wider level it seems a bit silly talking greaze on a mixtape

yeah, it is down to quality
but it seems a bit ingenine when you talk about bussing gun on an underground release, and then having collaborations with darlings of the british music press on an album
Just a bit incongruous imo, and the type of music grime is means its nigh on impossible to say faithful to the sound and reach a mainstream audience simultaneously

It just didn't really come off in london town. wouldn't say kano is over rated. Home Sweet Home = a classic grime album (yes it was grime{in most places}). Kano coming back to the scene, weather he wants to or not, is a good thing and if he does i can't really see him leaving. As long as his next album is grime. If he brings out a grime mixtape and then a hip-hop album he has just took the scene for any wast tangent.

3) On Westwood last time he was on he flopped badly on grime. His flow was not what is was in '05, he hadn't heard of any of the grime beats westwood played and he thought stageshow was a funky house beat!
my conclusion: He can be a top boy in grime once more but he needs to prove himself again as the emceeing levels have risen considerably from when he was last on it

Reading this thread makes me want Kane to go for it big time. I want him to be top 3 in grime again. By the way, how old is he now roughly?

Best case scenario.....
Kano revives Demon, picks up Ghetts on the way to the Rinse studio where Mak 10 is waiting for them for a 4 hour extravaganza
I would not be able to sleep for days if that happened
and shark major jus happens to be there munching a big mac in the building so joins in :D

I'm reading that he wasn't offered to sign directly to Warner or Atlantic like he wanted, but to another sub-label, and that they were insistent on a 360 deal and he wasn't keen.

Sarcasm aside, a 360 deal is where you have to relinquish control of merchandising, touring, etc to the label so they can take their cut from that too (it's become more prevalent since the advent of downloading and falling profits for the majors - soon enough, every deal with a major is gonna come like this). You can make a lot more from your deal up-front if you do this (madonna just took £120 million in cash and stock options for her recent deal), but a lot of the concessions you make get 'repaid' with benefits you never actually see. You have to be a clued-up negotiator to get a good 360 deal. If done right, it can mean more support from the label in terms of security, promotion and royalties. Done wrong and you end up working twice as hard for less.

seen, didn't know that thanks.
Kano doing a grime mixtape can only be good for the scene IMO, if it's good it gets some hype back around grime (badly needed), it it's poor Kano just goes back to hip hop

Meh, he hasn't got much to loose to be honest. Alot of grime fans only rate his old stuff and class him as a sellout. If he trys again and fails, then he will still have the same reputation. If he succeeds, which i suprisingly think he will climb the ladder quickly, then as you say, there will be a lot of hype along with him. I seriously hope he does well. EDIT: NO HOMO

I think it will be interesting to see what happens if he does come back to the grime scene but i dont think it will necessary mean he will be like what he "used" to be back in the day. Personally i think hes gonna have to pull his socks up if he comes back to the scene . . . . i can imagine alot of MC's queuing up to to go at him.

as long as it's all grime and not 2 minute hip hop tunes with strange American samples (what the fuck was that conversation between two 13 year olds about a baby at the start of one of his tracks about) i'll cop.

The grime scene he left was not the grime scene of today.
People were a lot more open minded about things.
Its better hes coming back than not coming back.
We need some star quality in the scene.
You never hear Bizzle getting all this abuse, and he sold out big time.

Truesay he said this last year when he was still signed so llow your chat bout "using us to get signed again"...all a bit emotional.
Kano is a big boy MC and ill be hype to hear him on grime again. Just hope he is better than his embarrassingly out of touch ting on westwood.

He aint back yet, ill believe it when i see it.
I aint getting too hyped about it but it would be fucked. I ain't sure if he'll still be his old self though after being in hip hop mode for a bit.
If he does come back still, no doubt he'll doing something with Ghetts and Stryder.

you'll get wrapped/mister/Bizzle Bizzle >>> any 135-140 BPM tunes on london town
IMO they made up 4 all da indie/grindie/hip-hop on Back 2 Biznizz (which i didn't mind anyway)
but back on topic - i hope kano comes back and smashes it with this mixtape.i didn't mind london town or the mixtape, but when i 1st heard grime MC i thought that he'd never come back 2 the scene.
il defo cop the CD, but he needs to do summat as good as Axiom, if not better

He was one of the best in his heyday but decided against it and went to the dark side of UK hip-hop better known as Urban music.

I'm simply a fan of Kano's music. Whether he's on albums or Grime, I tend to like it. It was disappointing to hear that he denied his Grime roots, but the fact that the plan for the Grime mixtape (wasn't sure if it was still gonna happen...heard about it when he was still with the label) is still in effect then I'm going to look forward to it.

Yeah man, i'm a kano fan. The only reason i was a bit disapointed in his albums were i thought there would be more grime. But Home Sweet Home >>>>>>>>>>>> and London Town is decent, i listened to it a few times and i've still got a few trackson my ipod. i also don't think grime mc was sendin for the scene jus the kids who wanna b like their fav mc instead of comin fresh, and people who jus think i'm nang sign me i'll blow.

I'll give him a chance... but he better be careful people will jump at the chance to clash him just for hype.

i had no problem with kano selling out,any other person on this forum would of done exactly the same thing in his position.
i also got no problem with him coming back,i just dont like the way hes making out that hes coming "back to his roots" out of choice.
if he was a man about things he should just turn round and say;
"you know what,i neglected the grime scene,i should of stayed a peice more true to the scene but i was blinded by stardom"
its a straight d/l for me now, cause he is obviously just trying to take grime fans for chumps.
