View Full Version : Grime stopped growing?

During my google research I noticed that the inital rise in intrest from people started to grow from 2004, it peaked in early 2006 and then dipped for the rest of the year and has stayed the same from the whole of 2007 and 8 so far.
I think this means grime has become almost a club which is good at keeping its exisiting fans, but the scene is no longer growing and reaching new people.
This could be down to the lack of press coverage in the mainstream media.
Looking at dubstep the genre has no intrest until mid 2006, but since then its grown to have over twice as much intrest as grime.
Bassline seems to be on the rise, with Bradford as its main source of intrest, but does not seems to be rising as quickly as i would have thought, but in terms of its life cycle in the mainstreams eyes it very early days.

I think by the end of the year there will be certain releases that will draw attention to the scene.

Im getting this from google.
Go on google >> More >>> Even More >>> Google Trends.
This is not really that much of a new scene. 4 years. Other scenes have been growing faster.
That H two O song has about 7x more intrest this month than grime has ever had in its peak.
Hopefully more interest will come, but there is a slight decline at the moment which will continue if grime does not pull something decent out of the bag this year.

Goodz and Newhams, and JME.
If Newhams dont drop thier album this year then they can fuck off IMO.

I think some heads are thinking outside of the box this year and may be able to draw new people to the music as well as keeping existing listeners.

BTW this is not an attack on grime, this is just what the figures suggest.
On a positive note we have a loyal fanbase. Which has been good in order to give acts in this scene time for trail and error and move towards their potential.

Nah it's an interesting fact man. Grime never died lol maybe it's just been hibernating a while..LOL Nah but on a serious note I'd be really interested to see the charts towards the end of year.

I mean in all fairness it looks to be getting slightly higher on the graph again and it's kind of been steady ever since it rose but it would be nice to just see it steadily rise on that thing in a big way.

LOL It's a par because some of the highlighted things are about Grime (as in dirt and mess) lol. So you get Mr Muscle fanatics searching Grime too.

Grime being dead is more about perception than fact.
I don't think anything has changed during the course of the scene.
I think around late 2005/early 2006 some artists had to accept that the mainstream was not ready to embrace another grime mc just yet. A lot of people fell away from the scene, but a lot of people took something from this and put the work in to do their stuff themselves.

But look up things like Dizzee Rascal, Boy Better Know etc, they can not be mistaken for stuff outside grime.
But I guess we should judge the success of the scene on a bathroom cleaner just for a laugh anyway.

I think the real issue is how to spark the interest in Grime again man alot of people have been content doing what they do and have the same DJs play their shit and the same people buying their records, WHICH for the record is great. It's great having a loyal fanbase and having certain DJ's showing you constant support but all that does (as the chart shows) keeps the scene on one level. We need a few artists to come with real creativity and take it to a next level.

And of course as much as a lot of people hate it.
Grime needs a couple of commercial hits.
POW done it.
Wileys gonna top the charts, like I say I hope it has a Grime B side and none of those bait remixes.

A lot of people have lost interest in the genre while others get into it.

If you look at the articles this also considers grime as in dirt, can't really judge using that, the dubstep one would be more reliable though.

i don't think grime has stopped growing in size to be honest i'm sure theres more and more fans, its just the quality of the music thats worrying

dubstep is like grime, its a required taste.
But dubstep has gone worldwide.
Bassline is a mainstream taste so is getting more fans in the UK.
I think Bassline is cheese and I think people will get bored of it soon maybe, not really a london sound yet, maybe if the sound evolves it will be.
I think that Funky is gonna be the big underground scene here in London/Essex + them others in the next year or two.

go back look at the trend thing and most of thr references to grime that were searched are nothing to do with grime music

I disagree with judging a scenes growth by searching google for a word. Alot of people search grime for other definitions than the actual genre of music. Plus, check out this:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=hiphop
http://www.google.com/trends?q=pop
http://www.google.com/trends?q=trance
If your theory is correct then hip hop, trance and pop are also dieing. Seriously, this is dumb. You cannot judge a scene by google trends. On the other hand looks like music is dieing to:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=music
So everything is dieing according to your method of research.

Considering i practically ended this thing lol i think you should stay away from google. You spend to much time researching search engine shit, go interview the public or something. Make a blog but don't go googling shit. Get meeeeee!

lol at basing your argument on google research. its been growing quite rapidly for over a year now. go out of london and i guarantee you'l hear people blaring out tinchy, ghetto, wiley tunes out of their cars and phones on the bus etc. thats when you know its grown to a bigger audience.
