View Full Version : Affinity to Your Football Club

What is your affinity to the football club you support.

(no homo from now on coz its football lol)...

Ever since I was 7 and introduced to Liverpool FC by my cousin I have never looked back and Im obsessed with following my football team (Liverpool FC), across the world and the country! It's like an 'adult' WWF for me. I can't stop thinking about the next game and every defeat hurts coz you know your other club supporting mates are gonna be taking the piss the next day, especially when we've never won the league while I've been alive :(

When I was 7 years old, I was very much around my dad, who unlike my mum, was brought up in Lancashire. So while I was brought up to support Liverpool, him and his mates were big United (and lesser so Bolton/Wigan) fans. Since I was 7, everytime we played United, I would bet my weekly pocket money that we would beat United with a regular at the pub. No homo, but at that age, he'd often find his money next to his pint at the bar by the end of 90 minutes after a David James error and an Andy Cole goal and would find me outside in the beer garden sitting on my own, probably crying into my Liverpool shirt- although he always gave me my money back!

Since then, Ive been to two European Cup finals, and fortunately as a male supporter with pride etc at stake, I've only ever broke down into tears once since, and that was during the Arsenal FA Cup Game at Anfield in 2007- while holding a banner up at the very front of the Kop for the first 6 minutes, with my older mate who was at Hillsborough on one side, and a guy who lost his younger brother there on the other...while we sang the the 6 minutes of 'Justice' chants for the 96 who died at Hillsborough- emotional still.

Is this why some clubs have more passionate supporters? I go absolutely pyscho when Im at a Liverpool game and nearly always get chucked out at West Ham. Its kinda like a second chance at the weekend. If everything with my job/life is going tits up, you get a second chance when you go to the football to release your emotion with a load of people who feel the same way - through history Londoners, Scousers and Mancs have had it hard on themselves and is this why the atomsphere is better at those grounds, because everyone feels the same way? This is why I hate the ridiculous price rises- pricing the real guys out of the games- it didn't use to be entertainment it used to be a release for everyone who liked football to get their anger out.

But how much is your affinity to your club?

Thierry Henry later described it as awe inspiring. As you look at the Kop Im on the left holding the Spanish flag :( R.I.P.

Anyway on a positive note, we should win some more points this weekend, Arsenal have a hard run coming up... United ot win the league?

Fuck, been going the match since I was 5, the Kenny Dalglish testimonial. (Makes me feel old, saying that). Liverpool all the way and when I've lived here (off and on) I've probably seen 75% of the games at Anfield, from League Cup to the UEFA Cup to whatever. Only real regrets I've got are about seeing us in Europe.

I was on Match Of The Day once, actually. I'm six I think, maybe seven, at the Liverpool Auxerre home leg, we won 3-0. Down the Anny road end, Steve Mcmahon hit this ball over the bar when I'm coming back from the toilet with my dad and it smacked me in the face. So I'm on telly crying and all that.
The tape of it wore out and we lost it, been looking for it on the internet and all that for years.

i support a pretty shit team (however top of the league atm) so when we lose im not amazingly bothered, obviously very pleased when we win, only time i would get angry is if we lost to Palace (fiercest rivals)

But i think its the same for everyone when you go see your team in the flesh, when they win your on a natural high, when they lose your pissed for a while.

I voted "Elated when we win and utterly gutted when we lose, especially to our rivals" at the time but now it's more "I like it when we win, but its just football, if we lost I wouldnt care" mixed with "I look out for us on the BBC/Skysports results ". I don't even always watch us if we're on TV, got bored of football.

I grew up in a West Ham family but support Spurs lol. Nearest club was QPR growing up, dunno how it happened really. Went to my first game at 7 for a Xmas present, safe mum. Finally got a season ticket when I was in college (severely dented my social/financial life), then went uni, now moved away with work for a bit. Would like to get it back one day, but you'll never get the seat with your mates back which is a bit of a par.

last option

every single game we lose or drop a point (when should of won) i get so frustrated and my mates think i turn into a dick lulz
when we win i am the happiest guy.

but when the scum of the city (the vile) beat us i tend to stay in and not speak to anyone. or go out and drink the sorrows away.
same with those filthy dingles aswell.

west brom as a team i can get on with but when they beat us the other week i was fuming.

hij, remember 2001? birmingham liverpool worthington cup final? you beat us 5-4 on penaltys? i was only 9 at the time but i was sooooo angry and upset (didn't cry, been a badman from early). cunts. walked out of the millennium stadium felt like i'd been punched in the face. what a long journey home.

Wasn't that the game where Andy Johnson missed a penalty and Trevor Francis was hugging him in tears at the end of the penalties? They were both crying?

Not as devoted to football as you lot obviously. I cant travel to portsmouth every week to watch them play and theyre never on tv here so i kinda have no choice in that. If i lived in Portsmouth i would go to the majority of their games. I was gutted when they were relegated last year, and ive watched the gamecast for almost all the games so far this year. I was very excited when they beat leicester. I'd die if they got relegated again.

I'm a Nottingham Forest fan born and bred, pure red blood through and through, being a true football fan isn't something you can help. Same as being attached to making music. My dad who i no longer live with used to play for the red's reserves but he wasn't my influence I don't think, I'm from Nottingham and kinda just walking along Trent Bridge seeing the City Ground by the banks of the Trent kinda made it special i suppose. I've never understood how people can be from somewhere like Portsmouth and "support" Man Utd, fuck armchair supporters, why support a team from a city you never been to?

Anyway, there's nothing I hate more than D*rby fuckin scum, sheepshaggin wankers

I'm probably the top option unless I've gone to a match which is very rare now in which case if I was at the ground I'd be gutted if we losenothing wrong with forest, in fact i always what the nottingham teams to do well (mainly forest though) but arsenal are my team, always have been always will be, i didn't choose them, it just happened.

also see this previous answer, when questioned upon this subject

I started to become a fan of Arsenal for the simple fact that when i was younger they were the ONLY ENGLISH team that i could watch happily for 90+ mins, I don't know why but they were the only team I was drew towards, even when i didn't know much about football arsenal were the ones that i would say was my team and so ever since then they are my team and back then they weren't even wining shit so that point is void, it wasn't because of ian wright either. Oh and by the way no one in my family older than me supports Arsenal, it was all free will despite my dad being a man u fan.

I've never understood why people believe you should support your local team (even though i constantly want forest and notts county to do well) you support the team that you feel you love, its that simple.

When i was in school had a season ticket for like 5/6 years running, went to away games etc. cause it used to be worth it, was entertaining and we were one of the best teams outside the top 4. Now i dont go, because i dont think its value for money at all, getting charged premier league prices to watch the millions of pounds worth of players Strachans brought in struggle in the championship is not for me.

Will still go the the Derby matches though, hold tight Leeds on New Year. Teesside Aggro!!

edit: incase it wasnt clear, i dont not go because were shit now, ive sat in that stadium many a time watching the team fall apart, just aint worth it.
