While perhaps hijacking Fullygrown’s style of title, I feel that when your name appears in the adjective describing the act of stealing, your exempt from any criticism. Big up Goodz too, the author of the lyrics which originate from a song on the excellent Axiom EP- while not literally putting any aerials up (the digital age is upon us I guess), are people finally reclaiming the scene?
It had been a good week for Grime in terms of radio, I pondered, having heard D Double E, Germz, Z-Dot, Spooky, Mad Vybez, Meshak Nasty, Roll-X, Spyro, Vectra, Hammer, C Gritz, Jeeday Jawz, Jammer, Blacks, Score Five, Penguin, Elijah and Skilliam-the Butterz lot, Direman, Wolf and Lil Nasty on radio over the weekend. If I forgot anybody, my sincere apologies, it was hard to name every guy as there was simply so many this weekend.
Even as I hit the sack, so I could get up for work the next morning, I discovered that JJ and the OG’z had landed at Rinse. Just a flash in the pan or the beginning of a resurgence? The latter I hope. Pirate radio was that good this weekend, I totally forgot that Westwood was on Sunday, if only weekends were more like that. Who was on Westwood by the way, I wasn’t paying attention?
While Jammer in the list is perhaps one of the names you might associate with commercialisation of his music, alongside old school comrades such as Skepta, Wiley and JME among others - the rest of the younger names in that list now have the chance to become the new iconic figureheads of grime over the coming years- plus a few others who didn’t reach this weekend.
For once I didn’t care that the legendary artists who have served this scene weren’t on the radio themselves (although there must be props for their productions which were battered the weekend over and of course with the exception of D Double E who is one of my favourite artists ever and was holding it up himself this weekend)- I was just glad to have grime, hype and randomness/jokes back on a set that lasted longer than 20 minutes- and several times as well. I get the feeling that I’m not the only one. It’s nice to have DJ’s drawing for the selection of Grime bangers, over commercial pop hits, just because they are from an artist who is from the scene- why don’t more DJ’s do this? Score Five sets levels in this regard in my humble opinion.
And as an open message to all artists within the grime scene, at least from me as I can only speak for myself- reach pirate radio man. Even if it’s just once a month, evidently a lot of people want to hear from you in an environment where anything goes, rather than listening to you trying to drop swear words from your bars live on Westwood.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of respect for the older heads who battered radio back in their day, but the less they touch down at radio, the less I care and start to look at the new talent that are working hard. Big up every man who reached this weekend, DJ’s, MC’s and those there for the love of it- reclaim the scene…. innit. Besides, you’ll give Slackk a reason to continue updating www.grimetapes.com (http://www.grimetapes.com) in years to come.
