What Makes Music 'Grimey'?

In any conversation about grime there's always a drop of '**** is not grimey enough' etc. and I'm just curious as to what you people think makes artists and music 'grimey'. Not just the sub bass and breakbeats, but what other elements too?

Unremorsefully gritty lyrics. Talk of stabbing and/or shooting your fellow man. Constant reference to unfeasible amounts of drug-taking/selling.

Something like that.

I'll agree that its not alwaus subs and breaks, but I tend to rate tunes like that.

Yh me too but tunes with heavy subs and a breakbeats are dubstep not grime, generally speaking.

Remember - a lot of Grime has become Americanised so to base it on some of today's 'Grime' would be misleading.

Listen to older Grime and you get the general 'sound' of it. Generally dark but up-tempo. With specific clap and snare usage.
