Back in 2004 there was something called??? I don't know....

all I know is when forward riddem video came on television the volume would go up and I would start jumping around my living room.....

what was this music called???? I didn't care....it was just serious

then Wiley came out with the video what do you call it???

Crazy Titch, JME, Wiley even Wong......just a lot of characters popped up....

suddenly the genre had a name "grime" and to me Dizzee Rascal was the epitome of it.

What was grime?? It was young black boys saying "we can make good music and we don't care about what the mainstream and record labels think."

A long with this mentality you have the college days hype, happy slap videos appear everyone is hype...

4 years down the line what do we have??? We have the leaders of the grime scene suddenly running around trying anything in their power to get signed to a major record label?? it's the exact opposite of grime stood for when it started.

With the exception of Chipmunk every new artist that comes out we are quick to know down...why??? subconsciously we know that if we build them up they will just do a Kano or Dizze and try and escape to Ibizia and make pop/rap songs.

I love Giggs as much as the next man but this scene just seems polluted it seems like grime has lost the fun and excitement it had in the beginning. Westwood shows me on his show that there are a lot of talented mc's out there but grime just doesn't seem to have the heart it once had all those years ago.

And nothing is worse than seeing someone who had heat in 2004 trying to show the same fire in 2008.

Discuss....

The Channel U hype messed up the scene, the second SLK got their video on Channel U they stopped doing radio and tracks.....so did everybdoy featured on Forward Riddim! Plus it put lots pf people in the public eye that weren't ready or didn't need to be seen or heard like Mr Wong, Nu Brand Flex, Agrro and you

like I have said before don't blame Channel U

Channel U are the ones who rinsed forward riddem and made the people what they were.

Even the asian guy from the video has a career from just having a cameo in the video. That's how important Channel U are or were at the time.

Sheff.Steel

This aint memory lane, im afraid grandpa' and i think you're incorrect about every man

wanting a record deal.

If a deal comes, course man will take it but people like GC are still pushing the

underground. The underground will always be there and the scene is strong for that

reason.

Channel U made the people what they are now..............nothing

It was over exposure for the young scene

So Solid Crew didn't have Channel U, and it Channel U didn't make Dizzee Rascal or Wiley

Grime didn't need Channel U and it still doesn't

16th September '08, 03:13 PM
I have been in the scene a long long time. I was there when Garage rejected the music and particular artists (very few people know this). Grime did not build up from the ashes of Garage like popular opinion, no, the artists you see at the top today such as your Wiley's and etc were rejected from Garage, it just so happens that Garage died a death soon after - convenient. I saw the birth of Channel U, and saw its popularity amongst the youth. It was a very novel idea, to have a channel controlled and supplied by the scene it was promoting, unfortunately greed and selfishness rendered the channel useless because there was zero quality control, and that is apparent to this day. Dizzee Rascal was signed to one of the biggest independent record labels around - XL Recordings. To put Dizzee Rascals success down to a Channel like that is completely insane. I am not saying Channel U did not have a very very small part to play in his promotion, but I for one did not watch the channel and yet I knew about Dizzee AND bought his album.

Dizzee got signed at the end of an era, the music industry was on its last legs and was still willing to pump a limited degree of money into an artist and their career - he slipped in the door. Soon after the digital age begun and everything went to pot with P2P sharing and what not. Channel U are not responsible for anyones career but 8T2's, and you can see where that got him.

16th September '08, 03:13 PM

Badly Drawn Boy

Dont you remember what happened when dizzee won the award? He stayed quiet and went home, it was the media that was looking for him, not the other way around. How can you say the channel U was more influential towards them than getting a mercury? The media thought he was the start of some new black era to come from the underground. this set the benchmark for the other guys to get their slice and confidence to do so.

I know wiki sources should be given for fact but..

The awards usually take place in September but nominated albums are announced in July. It is often observed that bands who are nominated for, or indeed win the prize experience a large increase in album sales, particularly for the lesser known nominees.[1] Nominations are chosen by a selected panel of musicians, music executives, journalists and other figures in the music industry in the UK and Ireland. The Mercury Prize also has a reputation for being awarded to outside chances rather than the favourites.[2]

The thing i've never understood about grime 'artists' is that they make thier name within the grime scene, and when the mainstream does catch on, there catching onto them for doing/making GRIME. Kano was a classic example who had loads of press, reviews, hype around home sweet home and did well. (from what i can remember) the second he decided to give Ironik & any amreican rapper a run for thier money he flopped, Hard.

Nothing, but I'm not aiming for that am I, so its a stupid comparison. Its like a doctor saying to me 'What you know about removing a lower intestine'? Well I've not spent 3 years of my life trying to remove a lower intestine, OR trying to carve out a music career.

To be honest, if you came into a club in my endz, I wouldn't know who you were- no hype. 'Millions' of people knowing who you are right and based on that you gave 10 cd's to Channel U? Tiny Bee sold more than you on Grimestore and we don't have an 1/8th of the visitors Channel U do.

And if being that 'famous' means I get butters girls like this to do gif pics then I'd rather not.

Discuss....

Your main thread seems like waste tbh, because,

If you had read stuff, theres a interview right when Grime was evolving (Deja Days) where some guys interviewing D Double E. To cut the long story short, they made music for their life (to make money), not as a hobby (What you describe it as)

Secondly, WTF, How do you associate Happy Slaps with Grime. Completely Irrelevant.

As for the four years down the line thing, Everyone still makes Grime, and they've paid their dues to tthe scene. YOU 8T2 are NOT one to talk about that subject.

Just reading your whole post, it makes no sense, What exactly do you want us to discuss ?

Hij
16th September '08, 05:36 PM
well
shake it fast cost £800
I can b ur friend cost around £1550
cd costs around 50 p per cd x 200= £100
studio time £100 p/h

I haven't made much profit but I would have had I know about prs video royalties because shake it fast got rinsed.

A lot of money for fame.

Surely killing some hookers would be a cheaper way to be known UK wide

Making music and spending a lot of money merely for the pursuit of crap satellite fame, and to be spotted/loved-off in your local JD Sports by some pre-pubescent wastegash is really not the one.

Your life, it seems, is one of a desperate need for acceptance. They call that Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

You, my son, have lost the game.

I was calling tunes Grime back in 2002, so wat u on about 2004, pedro?

Fwd riddem was a hype tune, but it wasnt real " Grime "

It had grime mc's on it, and the beat was hype, but it was just Hip hop stabs on a 808 sub kick, with claps. More of a hip hop beat tbh.

grimey basslines etc.

fwd was a sampled hype hip hop tune.

those sounds dexplicit used can be heard in any hip hop tune.

People are trying to pigeon hole shit far too much

Grime, Dubstep, Bassline house/4x4/niche, funky house.

It all basically came from the same place, the same urban scene that we support.

If we just push our urban sound as a whole we will succeed.

Good music is good music.

Thats why most mc's now doin the Indi ting put 4x4, dubstep, grime, oldskool and other genres on there mixtape, its all urban.
