Cotto is a huge name in his own right too. And the way Bob Arum sees it if he puts Cotto or Pacquiao, his two biggest stars, in with his old enemy Floyd Mayweather Jr. there's a good chance they are gonna get knocked down a peg or two, and he will only get half (probably less) of the proceedings for his troubles!

Whereas if he matches up Cotto and Pacquiao BEFORE the inevitable Mayweather encounters he will have a mega-fight that he gets 100% profit from. Not to mention it will build the winner even bigger than before for the Mayweather fight.

Once upon a time Mayweather actually swore he'd never work with Arum so he will be making difficult demands and stuff now that he's conceded his future lies in facing off with one of Arum's boys

they fail to mention he was coming off a 2 year retirement and never fought again after the Hatton win, thus removing our ability to judge how good he really was at the time of the Hatton fight BUT it signifies he was likely too past it continue fighting at the top level
