View Full Version : Mixtapes - Promotion Vs Money

I always thought the idea of the mixtape was to promote yourself so that you could build a fan base and maybe land a record deal or at very least set yourself up to put out your own album.
But from the bootlegging thread it seems that people would rather just take the money rather than push their status.
They would rather give UKRS an exclusive than reach more fans, and they don't like people hearing their tracks who have not paid for them.
My question really is: do you think that mc's are just trying to make a quick buck and actually slowing down grimes process buy not pushing the sound futher by making decsions based on money rather than promotion.

yeah it is.. but in the long term.
There seems a big bridge between weed money and I can do this a full time job money.

some people can't/won't see that bridge though....
surprised with Asher D though I thought he would have more sense, or perhaps he was targeting his market through the main store/outlet of our scene

Yer but putting in work for an album costs money so surely you want money off the mix cd to pay for studio time etc.

More Money More Paper! Be real, even Bashy with a full time job on top still probably would want to make p instead of getting some fans in asia... Everyone wants money, it's pretty much what the scene was based on. No money from garage or DnB anymore so they thought "right, grime is the new thing!" Did it work? No. Theres no money in Grime, and so every chance to get some the artists are on it!

Yeah. Grime people seem to rather sell all 1000 to UKRS for less money than selling it to individual shops. They just wanna make quick money. They don't even care if the people who support them can buy the mixtape.
So they don't give a fuck about fans really. Yet we keep buying.

Nice one.
Hyperfranks Digital Outbreak is also the way forward aswell.
The thing is JME did make money and get promotion.
Some people can pull it off, a lot of slackers in the scene and that has always been in the case.
