There are many defensive midfielders better at tackling and closing down/pressing the opposition than he is, and many many better attack-minded midfielders better at passing, crossing and scoring. I never rated him much, but i've actually watched a lot of him and City this season and haven't been impressed at all.

As for him being a key player for them, the one who allows their more creative players to flourish, I don't think that's the case. Tonight they only scored through two poor pieces of defending and luck really.
At the start of the season when they were steamrollering everyone, it was because of Milner dropping back into his own half and the centre circle, spraying accurate passes out to everyone ahead of him, allowing Silva, Ageuro, Toure and co to bomb forward and rip teams apart.
I think Milner is City's key midfielder in that aspect, when he's not playing they struggle to break down opposition and are far less assured.
