GrimeForum interview Deeperman
Grime Forum catch up with one of the front men of the East London O.T Crew to find out exactly what’s going on with him at the moment and to see what he’s got coming in the future.
So what’s going on with you at the moment Deeper?
Well at the moment I’m just puttingthe final touches on my mixtape and that’s going to be finished very soon – obviously Left 2 Rot is out at the moment and I’m just trying to elevate myself really. I have a video that I’m doing at the moment that will be out in the next couple of months, which is for a single I have coming out.
So what sort of vibe have you got on the CD?
You know what you see what it is yeah? I’m hated on innit. A lot of people say yeah Deeper is only there because of Devz and personally I believe that the CD I have coming is going to change peoples opinions and perspectives on me.
So your going hard on the CD then?
Well what it is, its called “Get to Know Me” innit and rather than me just be a part of the O.T set up its about people getting to know me as more of my own artist on my own sort of vibe. There are a lot of tracks about me growing up and that which aren’t straight grime but at the same time theres a lot of tracks that the hardcore grime fans will be into, all them “reh reh reh” tracks full of hype.
Obviously in grime you get up to a lot of stuff, do you prefer chilling at studio doing a track or spraying down bars on a set?
If you asked me that questions 2 months ago mate I would have said to you that I preffered to do a set, but at the moment I like nothing more than really working on a track, trying to get the right emotion out that I wanna get out depending on the track I’m doing, perfecting it and that, its good at the moment mate.
And your enjoying working on it at the moment as well?
100% bruv!
So what’s your plan going forward from now, your gonna drop the CD and then? Are you going to be performing anywhere?
I’m gonna drop my CD first and then see the feedback that I get from dropping it. If theres really good feedback then thats a bonus for me innit, I know the hard work has paid off, but if its not, regardless of any negativity I’m gonna try and take the negative points on board and improve my music going forward. I’ve featured on tunes and sometimes its easier to feature on a tune where you just hav to bring 8/16 or 32 bars about the subject but if you have to do a whole tune yourself, you gotta come with the goods and keep people captivated for the whole tune yourself, its a lot harder but I think I can do it. I mean I’ve started writing my second CD already!
So the work rate is high?
Definately mate, I’m really trying to work hard at the moment behind the scenes to build upwards.
Obviously we were just in the studio at Lewi White’s a minute ago doing the studio set (downloadable here by right clicking and doing “save as”) and you had a lot of bars, you got a reload as well and there was only like 4 reloads in the whole set!
(Laughs) Yeah man it was a good feeling, the beat was good for it as well.
In all fairness bruv it was probably the best one of the lot, I think even I stood up clapping as well and I’m slaughtered! Do you think you have different sort of bars as well?
(Laughs again) Yeah man I would say thats true. Me and Dogzy when we write, we just write our bars like how we think, we don’t try to conform to no set standards for being an MC or writing bars you get me? Whatever I been doing, whatever I been feeling or whatever is going on around me I just jot it down in my pad and its written you see it? I’m underated I think and I’ve improved a lot.
Do you think being around Devlin has allowed you to improve yourself as an MC?
Obviously man, come on! Not only does he come out with stuff that makes you think “rah thats good” but also friendly competition means I try to raise my game to get towards his level you get me? I have to improve myself and having him around definately helps me do that. We like friendly clashing as well and all sorts, its all good.
So how did you get into the grime scene originally from the start?
You know what, I was just spitting bars, writing lyrics or whatever and I actually used to listen to Dogzilla back in the day as well you know.
So you listened to Dogzilla yourself before you started working with him? I take it him getting involved with you on a music tip must have been a big thing originally?
Yeah it was a big thing for me, it showed me I was good enough to bar with most of the scene. But yeah, one day we were at some festival thing me and Devlin, oh yeah Devlin got brought in first innit.
So you were mates with Devlin before the both of you really did grime?
Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah! Long time. But we were at festival and Dogzilla heard us and then he took us to studio and we all dropped some bars and obviously he rated us and ever since then like we been involved with O.T and we was just doing our thing bruv.
So when you got brought in what sort of instrumentals were available at the time?
At the time for me it had to be Danny Weed. Danny Weed and Shotz as well. (Thinks)
So mainly those two you were feeling at the time?
Yeah it was them two for me at that time.
And what sort of MCs were you listening to, obviously Dogzilla but who else as well like?
I was listening to a lot of Ghetts if I’m honest but you see what it is I was listening to everyone because I’m a fan of the grime scene man.
That’s interesting because I’ve found that some MCs who are heavily involved in the scene don’t even listen to their peers.
Yeah man at that time I listened to everything. I still listen to most things now but obviously if your up in studio all the time working on your own stuff it doesn’t leave you with much time to listen to everyone elses stuff, but I still listen to whoever is the top people at the time.
In that case, as predictable as this question will be, if you had to say a top three who would it be?
(Reels them off without pausing to think) It’d have to be Devlin, Ghetts and Dogz.
So your CD is coming out when?
(Laughs) I’m not telling you any dates bruv! It’s nearly done and I’m going through the motions but I don’t want to promise any times. I also got features I need to get completed like Ghetts, Al Blaze as well as Dogz, Devz and a couple singers on there its good man its really taking shape. But I’m trying to get it out this year or early next year.
So what’s your ultimate aim from music then?
That’s a really interesting question man. Obviously I’m just doing the best I can, I know a lot of people are in the game in order to make a mill and all that but I know that obviously that ain’t really going to happen to someone like me – that’s gonna happen to the likes of Ghetts and Devlin who are obviously pushing and pushing to do well. They’re all doing their best to try and open that door man.
And would you say ‘The Door’ is open more now than say it was two years ago?
Yeah man definately, 100% man, 100% I hope to see more people coming through from the scene because its always a good look whoever it is, we’re all trying to be successful and more coming through improves the scenes credibility.
So to wrap it up are there any shout outs you need to get across?
Shotz. Dogz. Devlin. Ghetto. Big up Frenchy and big up Con and shout out to everyone who resides in Dagenham man.
Whats the myspace?
Have you got any other websites people can go on like a twitter or a facebook?
Know what I ain’t even got a facebook bruv. I’m not good on computers man, I’d rather be out on road (laughs). But oh yeah make sure you go onto www.otrecordings.com
