Dedicated followers of the Grime scene and Roll Deep will already be familiar with the Aim High series, and for those that aren’t the fourth instalment Aim High: The Revolution is a perfect introduction to Target and Danny Weed’s series of mixtapes.

Showcasing not only the production skills that have kept Roll Deep at the forefront of the Grime scene for well over a decade, but also a seamless blend of established talent and new artists it is easy to see why Target himself endorsed this as the best of the series so far.

To listen back to Aim High Volume 1 through to the latest incumbent a progression of winning styles, flavours and mastery of the production decks and mindset of the Grime scene is evident, displaying a unique insight into the mindset of that era and this latest offering is no different.

With Grime reaching a stratospheric state that sees Tinchy Stryder rank as the UK’s biggest selling artist of the year, the task of producing a mixtape that ably encapsulates the variety, aggression and potential of this burgeoning movement is an unenviable task.

The intro sets the scene for what follows, a militant call to arms with J2K confidently declaring “the future is here now hail all the new shit new music new steps so we use it”.  New Roll Deep offering ‘In It’ quickly follows and Target and Danny Weed are back in business.

From the radio friendly Trouble to the raw unadulterated aggression of Grime Activity this collection is finely balanced, staying true to the pure definition of the mixtape, handing out a varied and accomplished masterclass in the skill of beatmaking in the process.

Packed with an amount of club bangers you would expect from such a competent duo, these are lined up alongside more introspective and progressive offerings like Dark Knight which illustrate the mastery in the production and a willingness to push the sound to places it hasn’t been before.

Another triumphant instalment in the criminally underrated Aim High series, The Revolution is able to stand shoulder to shoulder with the rest of this years’ mainstream successes from the Grime scene, giving new listeners an insight into the full spectrum of the Grime scene at its very best.

The biggest compliment that can be paid to Aim High: The Revolution is that it is truly representative of the Grime sound in 2009 and how it should be done.  For a genre growing in stature daily with artists signing deals with major labels, having regular number ones hits and pushing the sound worldwide this release represents everything good about the scene, reminding listeners old and new exactly why Grime really is the sound of modern Britain.
