We catch up with Hoodstars member DJ Jawzy who has been littering our podcast with some immense grime to discuss his favourite alcoholic beverage for on a set, who he thinks is coming up producer wise and discover just how he got his name.
Also watch out for the new podcast from DJ Jawzy dropping in a couple of days featuring Beat Creatures producer BigDubz its different and its definately a lot!
So, onto the interview…

How did you get the name Jawzy?
It’s my initials mate!
What you’ve got that many initials?!
Nah man (laughs) it’s like my first names Jordon, then Alan, then Wells, then Smith but obviously I switched the ‘S’ with a ‘Z’ then often people ask me “why” I’m called Jawz so it just got added on the end to get Jawzy you get me!
Nice one! So at what age did you get into DJing?
I started DJing about (thinks) 16, maybe 17?
What sort of records were you playing at the time you started, what were your favourites?
This was back when vinyl was around like loads of Wiley tunes. Do you know what, this was back when Mak10 was just doing his thing, it was all Mak10 tunes and back then Mak10 even had props in South them times. Then there was Essentials and that, N Double A.
So this was way back before CD’s then?
Yeah man way back, back in the day when you had to properly pay for your music, I was out there buying vinyl man, always. I used to pay for them.
What were the 3 sort of tunes you were hitting up most?
Hmm I can’t even think. Boy I don’t even wanna go with Wiley because everyone does. If I had to name three tunes it would be Strike the Match by 2Twisted Crew, as well as Hitman by Sticky, which was like that Bounce tune innit but some next version as well as Pulse Eskimo that was kinda hard still.
What known names in the scene have you DJ’d for that people would recognise?
In terms of radio sets boy, the whole of Hoodstars (Ice Kid, Dot Rotten, 12, Wolf etc), like throughout the years people like Big Narstie, L Man all the NAA massive, all of Essentials, fucking obviously people like Tempz, even Ghetto! Back when he was Ghetto you know! Back when he was rolling with Stormin’ in South and them man were coming with their ***** and that. Back in the Sticky days. Too many names bruv, too many names.
As a DJ you must come into contact with a lot of new producers and new MC’s, do you know of any unknown people who are set to blow?
Producers, erm, obviously for volume three there is BigDubz of Beat Creatures, he’s not unknown but he’s definately coming up, theres J Beatz coming up very hard, ZDot as well as Krimson and AKL- he’s alright as well he’s doing his thing. MC wise its people like, wow, (thinks) unknown yeah?
Well sort of yeah, they might be known maybe a little bit but are yet to be made household names in terms of grime perhaps?
Theres a younger in Hoodstars called Ibz and he’s hard buit hes a badbreed so he’s on and off the roads. Obviously you got people like Tiny and that, they’re coming hard and Maxsta. Yeah them man there really are coming up in my opinion.
What’s your favourite setting when your DJing, MCs on the mic or just spinning out some instrumentals?
You know what? You see me yeah, I used to MC a little as well and I like MCing because obviously I’ve grown up on sets and I’ve been listening to it from when it started and that. Back on Deja Vu and Flashback, listening from them days. So I’d definately say sets. Especially because of clashing, I love clashing man. I want to hear more clashing on sets because you don’t get that as much nowadays. When guys are just swinging it out on the mic, thats grime innit. Like you see this Dot Rotten and Jammer thing, and people are like “Rah Dot Rotten’s immature”, thats what makes grime though innit? Controversy is what makes grime, grime! It’s not a R’n'B scene, none of that happy stuff its straight grime. That’s why all these people complaining about immaturity need to realise that is this game though. It’s a hype.
So if your on radio and that, and you need to quench your thirst whats the drink of choice?
(Laughs) Drink!? Oh man drink you know. This depends whether your talking to me about a night when I’m on or off alcohol you know.
How about both? On a night your not on alcohol, what is it?
Well on a night when I’m not on it, I’m drinking KA or Rubicon. KA – Black Grape or something like that.
But when your on it?
Well yeah alcohol now! You got like Wrey Nephews, for the people that know me, even JME and Voltage and all of them, they know me as a hardbody drinker, even you’ve seen me when I’m drunk bruv? Infact your a hardbody drinker as well! I just drink straight innit, its a madness and its ironic, I’m a DJ and I don’t have a mixer! So its either straight vodka or straight wrey nephews for me!
Obviously your putting out mixes on the Grime Podcast at the moment and your on your 3rd installment, what else you doing at the moment and what else is in the pipeline?
In the pipeline, mans trying to organise a podcast set innit with interviews and then a set and that. I been trying to organise them but everything I organise them with certain people, it’s like ahhh long. I’m trying do to them like Logan’s show, like get them on when there is something coming out, some kind of set on a podcast, working with you and that. But these guys are taking long like “My CD’s delayed” and that, but that is going to kick off. I don’t even know the title of that yet but its definately coming.
But it’s in the pipeline though?
Yeah it is definately. I was also going to host CD’s but that’s not even grime innit, it’s not grimey to host CD’s you know so I allowed that. I mean I know Limelight does them but I don’t think its grime and I think its almost like jumping into a next genre. So allow all the hosting and that and just keep it how it is. Because a lot of guys hollared at me like “oh host my cd” but nah its not really for me.
Where do you see your DJing career going, what do you want from music?
See me yeah? Grime and music for me its not about money, obviously these guys who put the work in see it as a money thing for them and I ain’t going to lie I don’t always put the work in, but thats because man is living a normal life out here you know, I’m trying to juggle a normal life. Stay out of jail and everything. I don’t want to go back to jail so I’m trying to straighten my life at the moment. So for me grime is just for fun and for the love. Thats why I carry on doing it. Same way you might play football for fun but when you get older you stop because you got normal life, but I love grime, obviously my girl don’t like me doing it, but I really like doing it.
So you ain’t got too much ambition to really make a lot of money from it?
Not really to be honest, like if I can use my position to help others out then I will like, normal because I love grime and helping people out and that so its a standard. Going radio and doing a couple CD’s here and there, thats me mate.
That’s definately respected out here I think. Talking of which then are we going to be hearing you spraying down a set again any time soon?
Doing a set yeah? You know what bruv, I’ve got absolutely shit loads of bars! When I was in jail I filled up a whole A4 booklet full of bars, so I’ve got a whole mixtape written down, I just need to record it but I’m also contemplating whether to do it or not. I’ve got other bars so obviously I will jump on something soon. Mainly though I need to big up my little brother, hes started spitting now so I want to help him.
What’s his name then so people can watch out for him?
Haha, he changes his name a lot but at the moment his name is Ashton C. But I wanna bring him through and show him the ropes because you know what a lot of the youngers think its easy, just start spitting and your in. It’s not like that though you have to put the work in, they think “because I’m spitting I’m rising up” then when nothings happening they are like “what’s going on?” and they are ready to quit straight away. So they need to realise they need to put the work in because certain man have been doing this thing for decades now.
So we’ll be hearing a lot more from you and your brother Ashton C soon?
Yeah bruv, it’s coming.
Shout outs?
Yeah look out for Dot Rotten’s CD coming out soon which is entitled Something Out Of Nothing and he’s got something dropping the month after like straight away, so he’s dropping two things in 2 months, its going to make a massive impact believe me. That’s end of October and end of November. Look out for people like WereWolf and that they got instrumental packs coming out soon. He’s got a little mixtape in the pipeline as well. The one thing I’m looking out for is Lord of the Mics though!
Any particular reason why?
Hold tight Jammer for trying to get Dot to clash Ice innit, that’s funny. That’s all I’m gonna say bruv its funny innit.
And to wrap up?
Yeah any producers and MCs holla at me innit my emails millwalljordan@hotmail.co.uk and send your stuff through also remember working with S Star UK its got S Star TV, S Star Clothing and the website is www.sstaruk.com look out for that.
