Grime Forum interview P Money

2 September 2009 7 Comments

pmoney22Grime Forum catch up with one of the top MC’s currently working the scene, none other than the legendary P Money. We discuss just how he feels when his lyrics go down well in a rave, just what exactly he thinks in regards to the Ghetts situation and he lets us know just what’s going on with the CD planned for after Money Over Everyone.

Remember that Little Dee, P Money and Blacks dropped the Grime Podcast a studio set to promote their release, you can download the mp3 directly by clicking on this paragraph!

With the CD from P Money entitled  “Money Over Everyone” coming out September 7th in all good record stores, we had to grab some words from the man himself. Pre order this CD NOW at HMV by clicking this link.

Can you remember the first instrumental you ever sprayed over and who the first artist you ever collaborated with was?

I can’t remember the first ever instrumental I sprayed over but I know it was like Chopper, Pulse X and Triplets them times there. I didn’t really collab in them days it was just the mandem from the same ends moving like one crew, I think my first proper collab was one tune I forgot the name of it but we done a video it was Me, Roachie, Royal, Saskilla, Prowlar an couple others.

As an artist you have come a long way over the last few years, you have progressed from the crew Fatal Assassins, how was it coming up in that crew what do you think you learnt at that time?

Fatal Assassins taught me a lot, loyalty power and respect. We had it all; we were the guys for south east. From when MC’s like Discarda and that were coming all the way to On Top Fm to spit with us I knew we were doing a lot. We weren’t just MC’s we were proper bredrins, moved as the unit for south, there wasn’t any arguments cause to the public everyone was a favourite, everybody may not of been on the same level with bars but popularity was nice for all of us.

More recently you have been heavily involved with the O.G’z, the first CD release was greeted with critical acclaim from the grime forum, are there any plans for a future release from the camp?

Yeah man there’s definitely going to be more stuff from the camp. The reason you might not hear a from other members is cause it’s not a crew. Not everyone has to be at every set or every show. OG’s was made for us to move forward together but still as individuals. Me Blacks & Little D have grown up together so we’re all tight but we’re still a unit, Jendor has done his CD, Little D has his one out, mine is on its way and so is Blacks’, so once they’re all out we’re moving as a unit again for O.G Season 2.

What happened with Dot Rotten leaving the camp and would you ever work with him again?

Haha everyone asks me this. Dot is cool he left for reasons only he can tell you. There’s no vibes or nothing, everybody hypes up stories an issues that’s what kills the scene man. Dot and Littles sorted what they had to sort out time ago. I don’t know when or if we’ll do tunes again but I wouldn’t rule it out, everyone’s got stuff to do at the moment.

Your well known for the hype you bring to sets, is this one of the things of grime you enjoy doing and if yes, why?

I enjoy grime because it’s OURS! I love performing, especially to a dedicated grime crowd like Chockablock tpmoney33

he other day was sick, although S.B is taking long to upload footage! I’m glad people say I’m the man for sets because I like doing sets but at the same time that’s not what makes you great, you need good tunes as well.

You aimed some bars towards Ghetto a while ago only for him and Wiley to bring the subject up at the video shoot for “She Likes To” and more recently you aimed bars at him again on a couple of sets. What’s the beef about and do you think he should be replying to you?

Sometimes I think us MC’s speak another language, we clock things instantly the public wouldn’t. ” I’ll jump in a clash like my knees has suspension” listen to that whole lyric and tell me if he isn’t replying. Listen to Autopsy freestyle. He is replying but he isn’t like me. Whereas I’m straight to the point I won’t write a lyric with bare fillings and then a little left hook dig, the whole bar will be for you. It’s an ego thing because I rate him but he thinks he is unbeatable and I disagree and I believe I can prove it end of. He says he won’t reply because he is bigger than me, which is cool but Tinchy Stryder is a NEXT! level to ghetto now but he’ll send for him so how does that work? What he says fails. If I came in the scene at the same time as him it would be different. People lost the meaning of clashing, because I think your CD sales, your videos, your past and future don’t matter in a clash because  its all about that present time. If Jay-Z got slaughtered in a rap battle by someone would you say Jay-Z is shit and can’t make bad man albums no more? Nah it just means he lost a clash. The Game is no where near his level but he still replied an showed why he is not to be fucked with so why can’t Ghetts do that? I got so much to say on this but I won’t it’s long, but big up Ghetts

though he is smart.

Your latest release is entitled “Money Over Everyone” and features a line up a lot of fans are salivating over. What can your fans expect from this release? And which is your favourite tune from the CD?

This CD is more hyped Grime. My favourite tune is either 1UP or Left the Room. These two mix tapes are like learning platforms for me/ simulations, I’m figuring out what works with what and who likes what. With this CD I got into the dubstep a little because I love that as well and I wanted to see if I have the right formula for it. It’s all experimental with ‘1up’ and ‘Fruits and Veg’, and with them two tunes I believe I have the unlocked a formula to combine a concept tune, with a hype beat, clever lyrics that are also catchy. Not many can do that or understand it. Money over Everyone is just Grime bangers the first tune is a concept tune where I test peoples brain an see if they actually listen to what I am saying an then the next four tracks will have you jumping around for time. I mellow it down a little with tunes like Don’t Understand and Crazy then get a little hyper with Hot Ones which was my idea its sick! My outro tune called Game Over is better than certain mans best tune and it’s just a freestyle! I got a few new faces on there feature wise but the production side is sick with beats from Rude Kid, Royal T, Silencer, Maniac, Sukh Knight & Mastermind. If anyone wonders why Don’t Understand is on both mine an Little Dee’s CD is it’s cause we’re using it as a single and planning a video. A bit like Wiley and Skepta using Too Many Man.

What are your plans for after this release? Where do you want to go after the release of the CD?

The next mixtape or E.P because I ain’t decided, will be a combination of the two mixtapes. I take in what people don’t like and fix it, then I take what they like and make a better version, Sounds & Gimmicks 2 is all I’ll tell you for now woaaahhh! but yeah The 3rd release will be bonkers It’s going to be so sick and I’m struggling to find a name as good as the CD.

You recently took over from Ice Kid and totally smashed Chockablock down with Blacks; do you enjoy getting a good reaction from crowds?

Oh my days Chockablock was sick. The crowd is what keeps me going; it’s why I go radio all the time. I always used to watch Skepta and Wiley and JME get some ridiculous reception and I wanted to get it like that, Chockablock showed me that work is paying off! There just needs to be more raves where it’s all just bless and vibes, MC’s spraying together, no qualms. You were out your face Hij you know haha! I rate the crowd as much as they rate me which is why I talk to them like normal people whether it’s on face book or at the rave. Mc’s tend to forget who they are to these people and that when they are still human.

The scene has a lot of artists in it at the moment, which apart from your close allies do you rate and what would be your top 5?

Haha I ain’t got a top 5 order or nothing but I’ve always rated Skepta, Wiley, JME, D Double, Ghetts and Trim.

Who would you like to work with in the scene who you haven’t so far?

I don’t know who I’d like to work with cause I’ve never really been the collaborating type  but I’ve always wanted to make a tune with JME cause he comes up with some sick ideas or Tempz. woah! imagine Me Blacks and Tempa T on a hype beat!!

If you could pick 2 producers to combine their sounds to make a production for you, who would you choose and why?

Combining producer’s woah! Would have to be Sukh Knight and Silencer, Dubstep and Grime all day!

Any shout outs?

Shouts to my O.G’z, Boy Better Know, Live Magazine, Cheeky, Diamond, The DJ’s & SBTV
